AIX Tip of the Week

Subject: New Memory Tuning Option for JFS2

Audience: administrators

Date: November 18, 2004

A new "vmo" option makes tuning memory for JFS2 filesystems more forgiving. Starting in AIX 5.2 ML4, the "vmo maxclient" setting can be made "non-strict" by setting the "strict_maxclient" to 0 (smit tuning -> Tuning Virutal Memory).

The new vmo option will be a relief for administrators tuning memory cache for JFS2, Veritas and NFS filesystems. The previous setting was only strict which could cause performance problems if set incorrectly. The new "non_strict" option is significantly more forgiving.
