TITLE: Manh P/V WinNT 3.5 Upgrade Procedure

SUMMARY

   This document provides a step-by-step, screen-by-screen upgrade
procedure when adding a second CPU to a pre-existing, single CPU,
Windows NT 3.5 system. This procedure applies to the following
   systems: 501500 and 501502.

NOTES

   This is an informational bulletin.

   This document provides a step-by-step, screen-by-screen upgrade
procedure when adding a second CPU to a pre-existing, single CPU,
Windows NT 3.5 system. This procedure is exclusive to Windows NT
3.5 and assumes a CD-ROM installation but can also be applied to
a Floppy Disk installation. The following list is required to
   complete the upgrade:

Windows NT 3.5 Installation Set (CD-ROM and 3 installation
floppies) Emergency Repair Disk P54c CPU Chip (AST kit number
501617-001), valid product ID number, and a backup copy of
Service Pack 4 or 5 if currently installed.

By following this procedure, all pre-existing desktop, network,
and application configurations will be preserved. If a mistake is
made or a file is corrupted during this procedure resulting in
the operating system (OS) not being able to boot, the "Emergency
Repair Disk", created during the initial installation of the OS,
can be used to restore the original OS configuration.

   Hardware Installation:

   1. Make sure power is turned OFF and the power cord is
      removed from the system.

   2. Remove the system's side panel and processor card.

   3. Install the P54c CPU chip into the ZIF socket making
sure that PIN 1 on the chip matches PIN 1 on the
      socket.

   4. Attach the fan power connector to the J2 Header
      labeled "FAN PWR 2".

   5. Re-install the processor card and the system's side
      panel.

   6. Re-insert the system's power cord.

   Software Installation:

   1. Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and boot the
system from the Windows NT 3.5 disk labeled "SETUP
      BOOT DISK".

   2. When prompted, insert Windows NT 3.5 "SETUP DISK 2"
      and press the key.

Each of the following choices is made on a separate screen as it
appears. A list of available options is at the bottom of each
   screen. Select the following:

   3. When prompted, press to continue.

   4. Select "C - CUSTOM SETUP".

   5. Select "S - SKIP DETECTION".

   6. Select "S - SPECIFY ADDITIONAL DEVICE".

   7. Select "OTHER-Mfg Disk Required".

   8. When prompted, insert the floppy disk containing the
SCSI Device Drivers and press the key.

   9. Select the listed SCSI Device Driver and press the
       key.

   10. When prompted, insert Windows NT 3.5 "SETUP DISK 3"
       and press the key.

   11. Press the key to choose a CD-ROM
       installation.

   12. Press the key to UPGRADE.

NOTE: Do NOT Select "NEW" Installation.

   13. Press the key to "SKIP SCAN DISK OPERATION".

   14. When prompted, remove the floppy disk and press the
        key to reboot the system.

NOTE: The CD-ROM should remain installed in the drive
       when rebooting.

   15. When prompted, enter the PRODUCT ID.

The Product ID # is located on the Windows NT 3.5
       box.

   16. Windows NT will begin copying files from the CD-ROM
       to the hard disk.

   17. When prompted, create a NEW "EMERGENCY REPAIR DISK".
Do NOT write over the original.

   18. After the NEW Emergency Repair Disk has been created,
press the key to reboot the system.

There should be no floppy disk in the floppy drive.

   19. As Windows NT3.5 begins its boot process, verify
that the second CPU is recognized by the OS. The line
       should read "2 Processors".

   20. Windows NT 3.5 should now be fully upgraded with the
       original desktop, network, and application
       configurations intact.

   NOTE:

If Service Pack 4 or 5 was installed previous to this upgrade,
then one of the following Logon error messages may appear:

   * The system cannot log you on [80000005]
Please try again or consult your system administrator.

   * Unable to log you on because the netlogon service failed to
   start.

   * The system cannot log you on [C0000037]. Please try again or
   consult your system administrator.

   * The From drop-down list box is blank. No computer or
     domain name appears.

   RESOLUTION
   =

To correct this problem, do one of the following:

   - If Windows NT is installed on a FAT partition, replace
SAMSRV.DLL in the %SystemRoot%\System32 directory with
the SAMSRV.DLL in Service Pack 4.

     OR

   - If Windows NT is installed on an NTFS partition,
re-install Windows NT to a separate directory. Log on
as the same user with same permissions and relace
SAMSRV.DLL in the %SystemRoot%\System32 directory with
the SAMSRV.DLL in the Service Pack 4.

     OR

   - Restore the SAM and SECURITY database system hives from
the last Windows NT Backup performed prior to the
installation of Windows NT Service Pack 4. This
restores the SAM and Security databases to the format
prior to the update of Service Pack 4. This format is
compatible with the original Windows NT 3.51 (Build
     1057) system files.

WARNING: This procedure may result in loss of any new users,
groups and trust relationships created since the previous backup.
You should only follow this procedure as the last resort.

     OR

   - Modify the contents of the emergency repair disk (ERD)
     by doing the following:

     1. Remove the attributes from the SETUP.LOG file by
typing the following at the command line:

           attrib -r -h -s a:\SETUP.LOG

   2. In Setup.log, add the following line to the files
      .WinNt section:

          \%SystemRoot%\System32\Samsrv.dll =
   "samsrv.dll","316d3","\", (continued line) "nt351 repair
   disk","samsrv.dll"

   3. Copy SAMSRV.DLL from the Windows NT 3.51 Service Pack 4 source
media to the root directory of the ERD.

   4. Restart your computer with the three Windows NT 3.51
      Setup disks.

   5. Select R to Repair your Windows NT.

   6. Select only "Verify Windows NT System Files" and
      continue.

   7. If prompted to insert Windows NT setup disk #4, press
ESC to continue with the Repair process.

   8. After you replace SAMSRV.DLL with the file from
Windows NT 3.51 Service Pack 4, press F4 to exit
Repair. Reboot the computer and restart Windows NT.

   MORE INFORMATION
   =

After you install Windows NT 3.51 Service Pack 4, the SAM and
Security database hives are updated to a new format. This new
format requires the new SAMSRV.DLL that ships with Service Pack
4, and it is not backward-compatible with the earlier versions of
   SAMSRV.DLL.

The following is an important notice included in the README.TXT
of the Windows NT 3.51 Service Pack 4:

When using the Windows NT Emergency Repair Disk to repair your
Windows NT system after applying the Service Pack, do not repair
the file SAMSRV.DLL. If it is necessary to repair this file
because it has become corrupt, you must replace it with the
   Service Pack version of the
   file.

This is necessary because the Service Pack update process changes
the user database, and the Service Pack version of SAMSRV.DLL is
needed to allow the system to function properly.
