Description

The IBM 9401 is an Application System/400 that consists of two versions, both for single- and multi-user environments. One is a Portable AS/400 version. The other is an AS/400 Advanced Entry version.

Model Description 9401-P02

The 9401 Model P02 System Unit contains the following:

The IBM 9401 Application System/400 Portable is an AS/400 system unit designed for the single- and multi-user environments. Its compact size and portability allow for easy transportation of the system between work and other locations. AS/400 software that currently operates on the 9402, 9404 and 9406 will run on the Portable system. This includes the more than 20,000 applications currently available for the AS/400 system, including client/server applications. Approximately the size and weight of a fully packed attache case, the AS/400 Portable comes with a carrying case that can hold the system and a notebook computer. The IBM ThinkPad and other notebook computers are supported. The hard-sided case, with the added benefit of wheels and a handle, may be checked as airline luggage. To meet the IBM protection standard for shipping, it is significantly larger than the soft-sided case. Any twinaxial device supported by the AS/400 system may also be used as a workstation.

The Multi-Function I/O Processor provides support for the service processor, integrated disk storage, external tape and one communication adapter.

The base workstation controller provides support for attachment of up to three twinaxial devices on a single port. Personal computers with 5250 emulation capability, including the IBM ThinkPad, and other notebook computers that support the IBM 5250 Emulation PCMCIA Adapter (#2808, P/N 92G5360), are supported.

Note: The PCMCIA adapter is not included.

Preloaded OS/400 Version 2 Release 3.

OS/400 Version 2 Release 3 is preloaded to save installation time. Additional AS/400 software may be ordered at the Processor-Based Group B5 prices. Additional applications can be installed by utilizing an optional external 1/4-inch cartridge tape drive, or via communications.

Full Function AS/400

The IBM AS/400 Portable One is a full-function AS/400 designed to meet the needs of customers who require a single user system that is easily transportable and can also run a wide range of AS/400 applications, including client/server.

The Portable One can also be used for development and testing of new applications, as well as training and customer support activities consistent with supporting multiple, remote or distributed systems.

Standard twinaxial-attached devices are also supported on the 9401. Examples of these are the IBM 3486, 3487 or 3488 displays and the 4028 or 4230 printers. These will attach to the 9401 via any supported IBM cabling including twinaxial cable, the IBM cabling system or telephone twisted pair cabling systems.

The standard communication port on the Portable One can be used with IBM's Electronic Customer Support facility. The adapter is equipped with an EIA 232/V.24 enhanced cable that provides attachment of an IBM 5853, 7855 or equivalent modem. This cable also allows the system to be remotely powered on via a telephone call to the Electronic Customer Support modem. The IBM 5853 and 7855 modems are designed to work with this remote power-on capability. IBM has not tested other V.32 9600 bps modems and these V.32 modems may not work with the remote power-on capability.

Small Light-weight Package

The Portable One is approximately the size and weight of a fully packed attache case. Its carrying case can hold both the Portable One and a notebook computer. For proper operation, the Portable One must be placed in a vertical position. A special base is provided to facilitate this.

Into this small, lightweight package, IBM has packed full AS/400 capabilities. The Portable One's lightweight and compact carrying case allows it to be easily transported by car or airplane, thereby saving shipping costs and eliminating possible delivery delays.

This system can pass through most airport x-ray carry-on luggage inspection equipment. However, magnetic inspection equipment may damage components or cause loss of magnetically stored data and software. If in doubt whether the magnetic inspection equipment is "computer safe," ask the inspector.

If manual inspection is requested and it is necessary to power up the system:

  1. Unpack the system and its power cord.
  2. Insert the power cord into its socket in the rear of the system.
  3. Plug the power cord into a compatible outlet.
  4. Turn the power switch on (located adjacent to the power cord socket at the rear of the system).
  5. Open the front cover to display the operator panel LEDs and numeric displays lighting up.

Initial Program Load (IPL) should not be necessary to complete the inspection, but if attempted, will require a console display to be attached and may take at least ten or more minutes to complete. Disruption of IPL by unplugging or turning the system off before completion may cause a longer than usual next IPL.

Device Attachability

Any twinaxial devices and adapters currently supported by the AS/400 system are attachable to the AS/400 Portable One as workstations and printers. Computers supported by the IBM 5250 Emulation PCMCIA Adapter, (#2808, P/N 92G5360), including the IBM ThinkPad portable computers, may be attached to provide the best portability.

Note: The PCMCIA adapter is not included.

The single twinaxial workstation interface includes three addresses. Configuration flexibility allows up to three twinaxial devices with one session each or a multi-session-capable workstation using all three addresses.

Two cables are provided for the attachment of twinaxial devices. Connection of the AS/400 Portable One to standard twinaxial cabling is by an 18-inch" (450mm) D shell to standard twinaxial connector adapter cable. Using the standard twinaxial cabling, all of the functions of the cabling system are available. Also provided is a direct connection to the IBM 5250 Emulation PCMCIA Adapter (#2808, P/N 92G5360). This is a special 18-inch (450mm) D shell to D shell cable. Using this special cable and the cabling attached to the IBM 5250 Emulation PCMCIA Adapter, the workstation can be placed about 2 meters away from the AS/400 Portable One.

Note: The PCMCIA adapter is not included.

To prepare a personal computer, including the IBM ThinkPad, with PC Support/400 for connection to the AS/400 Portable One, the same steps should be used to load the personal computer as for any AS/400 system.

If PC Support/400 is used on the workstation, it is important to remember that the AS/400 must be ready for connection and have completed IPL before STARTPCS is run on the personal computer. This can be done by putting a PAUSE before the STARTPCS command in the personal computer AUTOEXEC.BAT file or by running STARTPCS manually.

Note: If PC Support/400 is used as address 0 then the console QCTL subsystem can not be used. QBASE, the default subsystem, must be used.

Technical Description

Physical Specifications

Operating Environment

Temperature:

10 to 38 degrees C (50 to 100 degrees F)

Relative Humidity:

8 to 80 (percent). The optional IBM 3450 Model 001 and the IBM 7207 Model 012 tape drives used on the 9401 have a relative humidity range of 20 to 80 percent.

Max Wet Bulb:

23 degrees C (73.4 degrees F)

Acoustics:

9401 Model P02 System Units are acoustically designed for use in "quiet office" areas such as private offices, libraries, classrooms, and conference and meeting rooms.

Voltage:

The 9401 Unit can operate at either of two nominal voltage ranges:

The appropriate system power cord will automatically be supplied based on the three-digit country code. The 9401-P02 should always be used with a grounded AC outlet. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure a properly grounded outlet is available.

Operating Position:

The Portable One must be in a vertical position to operate properly.

Extreme Temperature Conditions:

The operation and reliability of the Portable One can be adversely affected by exposure to extreme temperature conditions, such as those that might develop within an automobile.

The following table can be used for acclimation times if the system has been in a hot environment for an extended period of time.

Temperature | Acclimation Time
------------------------------
    104 F   |   0.25 Hrs
    (40 C)  |
    --------------------
    122 F   |   1.5 Hrs
    (50 C)  |
    --------------------
    140 F   |   2.5 Hrs
    (60 C)  |

"Temperature" is the temperature which the machine is allowed to heat up to. "Acclimation Time" is the time required for the system to reach a point below the allowable maximum operating temperature. Since condensation is not a concern, when bringing a hot system into a cooler environment, the carrying case should be removed.

In addition, if the machine is moved between places with very different temperature and humidity levels, condensation can build up and damage the equipment. When traveling, allow sufficient time for the equipment to adjust to environmental changes before unpacking or connecting AC power.

The approximate acclimation times for a cold Portable One in the carrying case are:

Temperature | Acclimation Time
------------------------------
     10 C   |     0 Hrs
    (50 F)  |
    --------------------
      0 C   |   2.5 Hrs
    (32 F)  |
    --------------------
    -10 C   |   3.5 Hrs
    (14 F)  |
    --------------------
    -30 C   |   5.5 Hrs
    (-22 F) |
    --------------------

"Temperature" is the temperature that the P02 is allowed to cool down to prior to bringing it indoors. "Acclimation Time" is the time required for the machine's temperature to rise above the room dew point temperature in a room at 68 degrees-F and 40-45% relative humidity. (The machine will not actually be at room temperature, but will be warm enough that condensation will not occur.) The machine should be left in the carrying case during this time.

For rooms with higher then 68 degrees F, Dew Point temperatures, a combination of temperature and relative humidity that yields higher levels of airborne moisture, the acclimation times will need to increase.

Failure to permit sufficient time for the Portable One to acclimate itself, per the previous tables, constitutes system misuse and will void the warranty.

Limitations

The 9401-P02 does not include an integrated Save/Restore device, however, the 3450 Model 001 and 7207 012 External 1/4-inch Cartridge Tape Devices are offered.

ASCII devices cannot be attached directly to the 9401 P02 Portable One.

The 9401-P02 is not upgradable to any other AS/400 model.

Remote power-off is not supported.

Hardware Requirements

The system configuration consists of a 9401 Model P02 System Unit and a system console. The system console may include any supported display, IBM Personal Computer, or notebook computer emulating a supported display, attached to the twinaxial workstation controller.

Note: The PCMCIA adapter is not included.

In order to support the system console requirement for purposes of service on portable or personal computers, a terminal emulator program is required, (for example, DP5250). A PC Support/400 connection is not supported to provide this function. The console should be located within six meters (20 feet) of the system control panel, which must be readable from the console. Although required, the system console is not a component of the base system unit.

A printer is not required for service, however, IBM's ability to diagnose the system is greatly enhanced when a printer is available.

The Portable One requires an IBM 3450 Model 001 or an IBM 7207 Model 012 External 1/4-inch Cartridge Tape Drive for removable media functions and when an alternate IPL device is required.

Software Requirements

The 9401 Model P02 is designed to operate with OS/400 Version 2 Release 3 or later. The following PTFs are preloaded on the Portable One Version 2 Release 3.
