Abstract

Advanced Servers:

For Model 20S:

The IBM AS/400* Advanced Server meets the sophisticated demands of client/server computing. The Advanced Servers provide outstanding price/performance for the client/server environment. The AS/400 Advanced Servers operate with graphical interfaces on the most popular desktop operating systems, including OS/2*, Microsoft** Windows**, Apple Macintosh**, and AIX*. Customers can exploit the strengths of their client's of choice while taking advantage of the AS/400's application, database, and systems management capabilities.

For Model 40S:

AS/400 Advanced Server is now offered with IBM's PowerPC AS microprocessors. You can move to the new technology without rewriting or recompiling your applications, providing observability has been retained.

AS/400 Advanced Servers have been enhanced in capacity and performance to satisfy growing client/server requirements. The Model 53S, with a 4-way PowerPC AS microprocessor, offers up to 330% system performance growth in the client/server environment, over the fastest Model 30S available today. Any comparison between Model 53S performance and that of other AS/400 models will be based upon a comparison of their relative system performance ratios.

The maximum number of FSIOP ports has been increased on AS/400 Advanced Server Model 30S to 8 ports. The maximum number of FSIOP ports supported on AS/400 Advanced Server Models 50S and 53S is now 16 and 32, respectively.

Tools for system management and application development meet the requirements of customers who wish to implement advanced client/server application solutions without the complexity or support staff normally associated with other server platforms, saving operational cost and implementation time. With increased capacity and performance, AS/400 Advanced Servers provide high-function, high-reliability server capabilities for your client/server applications.

Advanced Systems:

For Model 200:

The IBM AS/400* Advanced System 9402 is the low-end offering in the AS/400 System line. With a fresh, new look, this model offers optional features to match processor performance to application requirements. When an increase in users or applications requires more CPU power, you can install a new processor feature, rather than doing a complete model upgrade. The system performance of the 9402 spans an equivalent model range from the 9402 Model F02 to the 9406 Model F45. Upgrades from AS/400 systems (except B models) to the AS/400 Advanced Series models are available.

The continued enhancement of the AS/400 system, through the AS/400 Advanced System models and with features that address your key business challenges, will help keep it the world's most popular multi-user business computer.

For Model 400:

AS/400 Advanced System now has PowerPC technology. With over 25,000 applications, AS/400 Advanced System provides you with the broadest base of business solutions in the industry. Leading-edge technology provides these solutions at the lowest cost. Capacity and performance have been increased, and you can upgrade without rewriting or recompiling existing applications, providing observability has been retained. Our intent is to provide the Model 530 4-way processor with at least a 50% improvement in system performance over the Model 320 4-way. The Model 530 average price/performance improvement is targeted to be 40%. Any comparison between Model 530 performance and that of other AS/400 models will be based upon a comparison of their relative system performance ratios. Continued advancement keeps the AS/400 the most popular business computer in the world, the most cost-effective to run, unequaled in business solutions, and unmatched in simplicity.

For Model 436:

The IBM 9402 AS/400 Advanced 36 with PowerPC technology offers three feature processors. Built on existing System/36 software functions and interfaces and a member of the AS/400 Advanced Series, AS/400 Advanced 36 shares 9402 packaging and incorporates 64-bit PowerPC AS microprocessors. Notes:

Capacities shown are for models shipped from the plant and include any prerequisite expansion features. Some combinations of devices may be subject to configuration restrictions.

The relative performance rating for SSP and OS/400 were achieved when running each operating system dedicated on the system, and may not be realized in all environments. The performance when running SSP and OS/400 concurrently, will vary depending on the workload.

* The relative system performance is estimated based on running the S/36 version of RAMP-C in SSP with a maximum configured Model 236 equaling 1.0. The SSP relative performance rating can not be compared to the OS/400 relative performance ratings.

** The relative system performance ratios are estimated based on AS/400 environment, native RAMP-C workload, with a 9404 B10 with 16MB of main storage and 945MB of DASD equaling 1.0. The ratios shown were estimated at maximum configurations running at 70% utilization. Relative system performance ratios may not be realized in all environments.

*** SSP Supports 4GB but additional DASD may be ordered (up to the indicated limit) for storing Licensed Internal Code, mirroring or Raid 5, and future growth

Conversion Considerations

Model conversions will be available to allow existing AS/400 Client/Server systems to move to the new AS/400 Advanced Servers. A 9404 system will maintain the 9404 type number designation and serial number when migrating to the new system. These conversions will require the replacement of the system unit and some of the features. Most of the customer's investment in hardware and software are preserved while moving to the next generation models.

Because these system upgrades involve substantial change to an installed system, accounting and tax implications may result and should be reviewed by the your tax advisor.

Main storage feature exchanges are offered for feature main storage cards that must be replaced. No feature exchanges are offered for other features that are not supported on the new models. I/O features remain the property of the customer. Most I/O that is supported on the Server Series models will also be supported on the Advanced Server models. See the optional feature section for a complete listing of all the features which do migrate.

The following 9402 Model 100 and 9404 Model 135 and 140 features and devices CANNOT be converted or exchanged and are NOT supported on the Advanced Servers:

#1102 - Battery Power Unit

Additional information on system upgrades

·         Software Migration:

Software Migration is similar to previous AS/400 upgrades. OS/400 Version 3 Release 0.5 is required for the Advanced Servers. It is recommended that this version of OS/400 be installed on the existing 9402/9404 system prior to the system conversion, to ensure software and application compatibility. Refer to Software Announcement 194-NNN (RFA 22594), dated May 3, 1994, for information on potential limitations.

When migrating internal I/O features, they must be converted, for a charge, using a feature conversion migrate kit. A 9402 Model 100 CANNOT migrate more than four DASD units. See the Optional Feature section for a listing of all the features which require a migrate kit.

When converting to the AS/400 Advanced Servers, existing data on the system is preserved. Customer buying a new #6502 RAID DASD controller may require a save/restore if they want to move existing internal DASD onto the new controller card.

Converting a 9402 or 9404 to a new AS/400 Advanced Server, is a task that requires advance planning by marketing, service and customer personnel. OS/400 Version 3 Release 1 and the related licensed programs should be installed well in advance of installing the model upgrade MES. There may be hardware features and/or software, including PTFs, required to install Version 3 Release 1 software and the model upgrade. Refer to the System Upgrade Road Map, SX41-3135, for additional information.

A 9402/9404 version of an AS/400 Advanced Server cannot provide a 9406 AS/400 Advanced System or AS/400 Advanced Server with operating system code via the DSLO option when running Version 3 Release 0.5.

A 9406 AS400 Advanced Server can provide operating system code to a 9402/9404/9406 AS/400 Advanced System or Advanced Server via the DSLO option.

All 9309 racks migrate as 9309 racks with feature #9141 or #9171 and can be attached directly to Model 20S for the purpose of attaching external tape.

The feature conversions providing for an exchange of the base Ethernet or Token-Ring adapter for a Base 16MB One-Port FSIOP or Base 32MB One-Port FSIOP will require OS/400 Version 3, Release 1, and IBM LAN Server/400 as prerequisites. The base Ethernet or Token-Ring adapters that are removed become the property of IBM and must be returned.

Upgrades to AS/400 Advanced Systems (models 400, 500, 510, 530)

Upgrading to an AS/400 Advanced System with a PowerPC AS microprocessor, requires advance planning by marketing, business partners, service and customer personnel.

New services are available from IBM to help you perform your upgrade responsibilities. Contact your IBM representative for services available. Additional detail information is provided in:

·         AS/400 Planning for PowerPC Technology (SA41-4154)

Consider the following before you upgrade:

·         The amount of memory and DASD space required will increase when moving to AS/400 Advanced System (models 400, 500, 510, 530).

Refer to Software Announcement dated June 21, 1995, for additional information, and support availability dates.

·         Internal Tape and DASD Conversion

When migrating 9404 or 9406 C, D, E and F models or Model 300 with feature #9142, internal tape and DASD features must be converted, for a charge, using a feature migration kit. Refer to the Optional Feature section for features that require a migration kit.

The following racks are supported on AS/400 Advanced System RISC models:

1.      9309-9141: General Purpose Rack without SPCN (stage 1)

2.      9309-9171: General Purpose Rack with SPCN (stage 2)

3.      #5040: Model D/E/F Bus Extension Unit (converted to #5044)

4.      #5042: Model D/E/F System Unit Expansion (converted to #5044)

5.      #5043: Converted System Unit (equivalent to 9309-9171)

Older 9309-type racks can be converted to one of the supported racks.

9309-9141 racks cannot attach to the system units power control interface. They can, however, attach to any of the other supported rack types, or can be converted to a 9309-9171 via RPQ 843849. If the rack is to be used to house tape or diskette devices only, and manual power control is acceptable, a wrap connector (PN 31F7631) is available. The use of this wrap connector is not allowed for racks containing DASD.

AS/400 units with PowerPC AS microprocessors use a substantially faster bus, which requires all existing towers or racks to have their bus controller converted to the faster bus controller, for a charge, using a feature conversion.

When converting to the new systems, existing data on the system is preserved and a save/restore is not required unless data is resident on DASD devices no longer supported. In these cases, a save/restore can migrate the data, or new DASD can be purchased and installed on the existing system; and then data can be transferred.

AS/400 System Installation and Upgrade Services

Moving to AS/400 Advanced Series requires careful planning prior to upgrading the hardware and software. Several different approaches are available to address varying customer upgrade requirements, and IBM fee services are available to perform part or all of the upgrade process, including upgrading from releases prior to Version 2 Release 3.

Your IBM representative will assist you in determining the best upgrade method for your operational environment. Contact your Availability Services Center. For additional information, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner, or call 800-274-0015.
