SYMPTOMS
========

In Word 6.x or 7.x, when you open a Word 97 document that contains auto-numbered
footnote reference marks that are formatted as special characters using Word 97,
the special characters may change to Arabic numbers.

This occurs specifically when the auto-numbered reference is an asterisk, a
cross, a double cross, or a section break symbol.

CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs when you use the Word Import Converter (Mswrd832.cnv) to
open the document.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this problem, upgrade to the latest version of the Word 97-2000
Import Converter. For additional information, please see the following article

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with certain versions of the Word
97 Import Converter.
This problem was corrected in Word 2000.
