SUMMARY
=======

This article describes how to play Microsoft Outwars with other players.

Before you attempt to play Outwars with other players, make sure all of the
players are using the same version of Outwars, at least one player out of three
has an Outwars CD-ROM inserted in their CD-ROM drive, and the remaining players
are using the Spawn installation of Outwars.

NOTE: When you play Outwars on the Internet, normal Internet latency can cause a
delay of as long as one minute before the score screen appears at the end of a
game.

connect to the Internet or log on to the LAN before you start the game.

Hosting a Game
--------------

To host a multiplayer Outwars game, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Outwars CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then start Outwars.

2. On the startup menu, click Group Maneuvers.

3. In the Communications Mode box, click the connection you want to use for the
  game:

   - IPX Connection for DirectPlay.

   - Internet TCP/IP Connection for DirectPlay.

   - Modem Connection for DirectPlay.

   - Serial Connection for DirectPlay.

4. In the Callsign box, type your call sign.

5. Click Host Mission.

6. In the Mission Code Name box, type a name for the game.

7. If you want to host a private game, type a password for the game in the
  Mission Password box. Be sure to provide the password to the other invited
  players.

8. Click Continue.

9. If you are hosting a modem game, configure the modem if necessary, and then
  click Answer. If you are hosting a serial connection game, configure the
  serial connection, and then click OK. When your opponent connects to your
  computer, proceed to the next step.

10. Configure the parameters of the mission.

  NOTE: For best performance when you host a multiplayer Outwars game on the
  Internet, set the maximum number of players to no greater than four.

11. Configure your personal armor and weaponry.

12. Click Roster, and then click Ready.

13. When all players are ready, click Launch.

Joining a Game
--------------

To join a multiplayer Outwars game, follow these steps:

1. Start Outwars.

2. On the startup menu, click Group Maneuvers.

3. In the Communications Mode box, click the connection you want to use for the
  game:

   - IPX Connection for DirectPlay.

   - Internet TCP/IP Connection for DirectPlay.

   - Modem Connection for DirectPlay.

   - Serial Connection for DirectPlay.

4. In the Callsign box, type your call sign.

5. Click Join Mission.

6. If you are joining an Internet TCP/IP Connection for DirectPlay or a Modem
  Connection for DirectPlay game, the Remote Link Directory screen appears.
  Type the name of the game host in the Enter Name box, type the Internet
  Protocol (IP) address or phone number as appropriate in the Enter
  Address/Phone Number box, and then click Connect.

7. In the Scheduled Missions box, click the name of the game you want to join.

8. If you are joining a password protected game, type the password for the game
  in the Password box.

9. Click Join Mission.

10. Configure your personal armor and weaponry.

  NOTE: On occasion, you may be able to select weapons that have been
  restricted by the host of the game. If you select a restricted
  weapon,Outwars replaces it with an unrestricted weapon when the host starts
  the game.

11. Click Roster, click Ready, and then wait for the host to start the game.
