SYMPTOMS
========

When you start Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia, you may receive the following
error message:

  The Wininet.dll file is linked to missing export Shlwapi.dll.

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur if Microsoft Internet Explorer is not installed
correctly.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

NOTE: Before you follow these steps, verify that you are able to reinstall
Internet Explorer, either from a CD-ROM or using an executable file that you
downloaded from the Internet. Note that Internet Explorer is not provided with
Encarta Encyclopedia Standard Edition.

IMPORTANT: Do not use this method on a computer running Microsoft Windows 98 or
later.

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Encarta 98 Encyclopedia or
  Encarta Encyclopedia 99, and then click Add/Remove.

4. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the program. If you are
  prompted to restart the computer, do so.

5. Restart the computer. When you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, press
  the F8 key, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Startup
  menu.

6. At the command prompt, type each of the following commands, and then press
  ENTER after you type each command.

  NOTE: When you press ENTER after you type each of the following deltree
  commands, you should be prompted to confirm that you want to delete the
  folder. If this prompt is not displayed, you may have typed the deltree
  command incorrectly.

  smartdrv
  deltree tempor~1
  deltree history
  cd system
  ren actxprxy.dll actxprxy.old
  ren cachevu.dll cachevu.old
  ren inetcfg.dll inetcfg.old
  ren inetcpl.cpl inetcpl.old
  ren mshtml.dll mshtml.old
  ren shdocvw.dll shdocvw.old
  ren shlwapi.dll shlwapi.old
  ren url.dll url.old
  ren urlmon.dll urlmon.old
  ren wininet.dll wininet.old
  ren wsock32n.dll wsock32n.old

7. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart the computer and start Microsoft Windows
  normally.

  NOTE: To restore Web browser functionality, you must reinstall Internet
  Explorer or another Web browser.

8. Reinstall Encarta Encyclopedia.
