This article describes how to play a multiplayer Microsoft Age of Empires II:
The Age of Kings game on a Local Area Network (LAN) using fewer CD-ROMs than
there are players in the multiplayer game.

The following table lists the minimum number of CD-ROMs needed to play a
multiplayer game.

NOTE: If you start a multiplayer game on the Microsoft Zone.com, or if you start
a modem-to-modem multiplayer game, all players must have an Age of Empires II
CD-ROM inserted in their CD-ROM drive.

To start a multiplayer game with the minimum number of CD-ROMs:

1. Install Age of Empires II on each computer.

2. On the first computer, start the game.

3. On the Main Menu, click Multiplayer.

4. If you haven't created a player name, type the name you want to use in the
  Name box, and then click OK.

5. Under Connection Type, click Local (LAN) TCP/IP Connection.

6. Click Create, and then select the multiplayer game settings you want to use.

7. Click to select the I'm Ready check box.

8. Remove the CD-ROM from the first computer, and then insert the CD-ROM in the
  next computer.

9. Start the game on the second computer.

10. On the Main Menu, click Multiplayer.

11. If you haven't created a player name, type the name you want to use in the
  Name box, and then click OK.

12. Under Connection Type, click Local (LAN) TCP/IP Connection.

13. Click Show Games.

14. Click the game you want to join, and then click Join.

15. Click to select the I'm Ready check box.

16. Repeat steps 8 through 15 to add an additional player.

  NOTE: Leave the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive in the last computer to join the
  game.

When all players have joined the game, the host clicks Start Game.
