SYMPTOMS
========

When you click Continue on the Product ID screen while you are installing one of
the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive the
following error message:

  This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

When you click Details, you receive the following error message

  EBU<xxxx> caused a divide error in module EBU <xxx>.exe.

where <xxx> is a combination of letters and/or numbers.

When installing Microsoft Zoo Tycoon, you may receive the following error
message:

  EBU<xxxx> caused an exception c0000006h in module kernel32.dll

where <xxx> is a combination of letters and/or numbers.

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur for any of the following reasons:

- A beta version of Age of Empires II is installed on the computer.

- A beta version of Age of Empires II previously installed on the computer was
  not removed successfully.

- The Riched32.dll file is missing or damaged.

- A rogue Ebu file from a previous installation is present.

- EBUxxxx has caused a general protection fault in module <filename>

where the <filename> in this error message will vary depending on which
game you are installing.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Extract the Riched32.dll File
-----------------------------

To extract the Riched32.dll file, use the appropriate method for your version of
Microsoft Windows.

Microsoft Windows 95:

1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click "Files or Folders".

2. In the Named box, type "riched32.dll" (without the quotation marks), and then
  click Find Now.

3. In the list of found files, right-click the Riched32.dll file, click Rename,
  type a new name for the Riched32.dll file, such as Riched32.xxx, and then
  press ENTER.

NOTE: If you receive an "Access is denied" error message when you attempt to
rename the Riched32.dll file:

  a. Click Start, click Shut Down, click "Restart in MS-DOS mode", and then
     click OK.

  b. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after
     you type each command:

  cd\windows\system
  ren riched32.dll riched32.xxx
  exit

4. Extract the Riched32.dll file from the original Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM to
  the Windows\System folder.

Microsoft Windows 98:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type "sfc" (without the quotation marks), and then click OK.

3. Click "Extract one file from installation disk".

4. Type "riched32.dll" (without the quotation marks), and then pressENTER.

5. In the "Restore from" box, type the path to the Win98 folder on your Windows
  98 CD-ROM.

6. In the "Save File in" box, type the following path:

  <drive>:\Windows\System

  where <drive> is the drive letter of the hard disk on which Windows 98
  is installed.

Remove the Registry Keys
------------------------

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems
that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor
incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Remove the following registry keys for the program that you are using.

Age of Empires:

- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires\2.0

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectPlay\Applications\Age of Empires
  II

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires\2.0

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires II

Flight Simulator 2000:

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectPlay\Applications\FS2000

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator

Links 2001:

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Links 2001

- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Links 2001

Motocross Madness 2:

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectPlay\Applications\Motocross
  Madness 2

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Motocross Madness 2

Pandora's Box:

- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Pandora's Box

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Pandora's Box

When you have removed each of the registry keys, restart the computer, and then
attempt to install the program again.

If this issue continues to occur, delete the temporary files in the Temp folder
on the hard disk, and then run the installation program again.

Search for and remove the Ebu file.
-----------------------------------

Windows 98:

1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

2. In the Named box, type the following line:

  "ebu*.exe" (without the quotation marks)

3. In the Look in box, click My Computer.

4. Click Find Now.

5. Press CTRL+A to select all files.

6. Press DELETE.

7. Confirm deletion.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition or Microsoft Windows 2000:

1. In the Search for files or folders named box, type the following line:

  "ebu*.exe" (without the quotation marks)

2. In the Look in box, click My Computer.

3. Click Search Now.

4. Press CTRL+A to select all files.

5. Press DELETE.

6. Confirm deletion.

Delete the Temp Folder
----------------------

To delete the Temp folder on the computer, use the appropriate method for your
version of Microsoft Windows.

Microsoft Windows 95:

1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.

2. Click "Restart in MS-DOS mode", and then click OK.

3. At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you
  type each line:

  deltree c:\windows\temp
  y
  exit

4. Clean boot the computer, and then install the game.

Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows Me:

Use the Disk Cleanup tool to remove temporary files:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools,
  and then click Disk Cleanup.

2. In the Drives box, click the hard disk on which Windows is installed, and
  then click OK.

3. Under "Files to delete", click to select the "Temporary files" check box, and
  then click OK.

4. Click Yes.

5. When the Disk Cleanup tool is finished, restart the computer, and then
  install the game.

  NOTE: If the issue continues to occur, clean boot the computer, and then
  install the game.

Windows XP:

NOTE: The Windows XP TEMP directory that the game setup in is trying to use
located in a specific user folder. For example:

  <your drive>:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Local
  Settings\Temp

1. Click Start, click Run, enter "%TEMP%" (without the quotation marks), and
  then click OK.

2. Click Edit, and then select Select All.

3. Click File, and then select Delete.

4. Click Yes to delete temp files.
