abstract

This file contains a UPS.NLM that ONLY works with an American Power Supply UPS. It supports serial port connections to the UPS with the correct cable from American Power Supply.

THIS NLM IS PROVIDED AS A COURTESY AND IS NOT SUPPORTED BY NOVELL.

installation

Load the appropriate version of UPS.NLM (according to NetWare version) by typing "LOAD path\UPS" at the console of the fileserver, where "path" is the path to the ups.nlm.

For SFTIII, this NLM loads in the IOengines.

A menu will appear asking for UPS Type and other parameters. Further HELP is available by typing "LOAD UPS HELP". This help screen also shows parameter usage for loading the UPS.NLM in an NCF file such as autoexec.ncf, if desired.

Note that with SFTIII, users WILL NOT be notified of the power failure. Also, the SET parameter "Always Down Server When Power Fails" isused to determine whether the associated IOengine is HALTed on power failure or the MSengine is DOWNed. If each IOengine is on a separate UPS, this parameter is normally set to OFF. If a single UPS is providing power to both IOengines, leave this parameter at the default of ON.

Serial Port Pin Functions

The cable connecting the UPS to the file servers serial port must provide proper signal states during AC FAIL and BATTERY LOW conditions. The UPS NLM monitors the following pins to detect these conditions:

Name 25-pin 9-pin Description
CTS 5 8 +3 to +15Vdc = AC failure state
DCD 20 1 +3 to 15Vdc =Battery getting low

UPS.NLM controls output voltage on the following pins:

RTS 4 7 UPS.NLM places +3 to +15V on this pin
TxD 2 3 UPS.NLM places -3 to -5V on this pin

issue

Solves the following problems:
1. The keyboard could hang when loading UPS.NLM.
2. No support for serial port connections to the UPS.
3. No user interaction for HELP was provided.
