IBM PC300GL (Type 6267, 6277, 6287) - Background audio noise with no microphone attached

SYMPTOM:
In the Volume Control utility, background noise (humm, hiss, static) is heard when the MIC slider control is moved and no microphone is attached to the system.
PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:
This tip applies, but is not limited to IBM PC300GL Series 6267/77/87 systems equipped with a "MIC IN" jack and running Windows 95/98 or Windows NT.
FIX:
When no microphone is attached to the system, the user can de-select "Microphone" under Volume Control properties to prevent the MIC slider from being displayed.
