TP 380,385 - Upper CPU shield installation considerations

Applicable to: World-Wide

The following tip will assist servicers in correctly installing the Upper Shield (CPU shield) and in some cases resolve system failures with no part replacement.

The following models for machine type 2635 (Thinkpad 380/385) are affected by this tip:
8xx
9xx
Axx
Bxx
Dxx
Exx
Fxx
Hxx
Jxx

** ALL 380/5-XD & 380/5-Z machines.

The Upper Shield is held in place with screws in 3 corners.
Note: Please refer to the IBM Mobile Systems Hardware Maintenance Manual Volume 4: Thinkpad Computers September 1997 page 83.

It is important that the tab in the fourth corner be bent horizontally or slightly downward to insure the CPU is held in place in all four corners. If the system failure is "No Boot"; re-seat the CPU and insure the tab on the shield is bent correctly. When the shield is removed and replaced, insure the tab is bent correctly. The shield is easily deformed; it must be lightly pressed over/on the CPU card, if this is not done future system problems may result.
