TP 390E - Recorded sounds not being played back properly

Symptom:
Recorded sounds are not played back properly.

Configuration:
Any ThinkPad 390E where Windows 98 was reinstalled from a retail version of Windows 98 instead of using the Recovery CD.

Solution:

  1. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager.
  2. Click on the + next to Modem and then double-click on the modem listed underneath.
  3. Click on the Resource tab.
  4. Remove the check mark from the Use automatic settings box.
  5. Change the Configuration to Basic Configuration 0001 and assign the I/O range 3E8h-3Efh and select IRQ 4 by clicking on the appropriate resource in the Resource Type window.
  6. Restart the computer.
