TP General - IBM EtherJet PCMCIA card not recognized by system

SYMPTOM:
After inserting the IBM EtherJet PCMCIA card into a ThinkPad, the card is not recognized by PC Card director or EZplay Several different models of ThinkPads and Etherjet Cards were tried and in all cases the system does not acknowledge that a card has been inserted.
CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad using the IBM EtherJet PCMCIA card.
SOLUTION:
In each of the instances, the external cable was not attached. Attaching the external cable to the PCMCIA card allowed the computer to recognize the adapter.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This is the intended operation; it allows the card to stay resident inside the computer and not consume computing resources or battery power until you are actually ready to use it. Removing the cable serves the same purpose as removing the card from the computer and without the cable attached, the card does not become active.
