TP 380XD/Z,385XD,560X,600,770/E/ED - No audio after the IBM PCMCIA (1969010) CD-ROM is installed under Windows NT 4.0
Applicable to: World-Wide
SYMPTOM:
When installing the PCMCIA CD-ROM drive, PN 1969010, on a system with Crystal Audio CS4237B under Windows NT, the CD-ROM drive will work but the audio on the ThinkPad will cease to function.
CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad using the Crystal Audio CS4237B audio device running Windows NT 4.0 and the IBM PCMCIA CD-ROM drive, PN 1969010. Currently the ThinkPads that use the Crystal Audio CS4237B controller includes the TP 380XD/Z, 385XD, 560X, 600, and 770/E/ED.
SOLUTION:
The cause is a DMA conflict. The CD-ROM drive, 1969010, requires DMA 0. This cannot be changed. Crystal Audio requires DMA 0 by default for audio capture and DMA 1 for playback. You can move the capture DMA in ThinkPad Configuration, by going to Audio ==> Advanced. Move the 2nd DMA from 0 to 3, and cold boot the machine. Re-installation of the audio drivers may be required.
