Aptiva - 2153 VMM32 Error

Under certain circumstances, you may experience a VMM32 error when you boot your Aptiva 2153 system. The message you will see is:

"VMM32.VXD is required to run Windows.
If this file is not in your PATH, you may need to reinstall Windows."

If you have a Umax scanner attached to your system, please contact Umax for updated scanner software

If you do not have a Umax scanner installed on your system, or you have already updated your scanner software, there are three steps which will return your system to normal operating condition.

Before performing these steps, please copy any personal data you would like to save to diskette. In step two, the hard drive will be formatted and all data currently on it will be erased.

Step 1: Update the System BIOS

This step requires the BIOS update diskette. Please click here to download this BIOS update:

To update the BIOS on your system, simply insert the BIOS update diskette and boot the system. The proper BIOS for your system will automatically be installed. *** Do not shut down the system while the BIOS is being updated. *** You may remove the diskette and reboot the system when prompted.

Step 2: Restore the Aptiva Preloaded Software

Warning: The following steps will result in the complete deletion of all personal and system data currently on your system. If there is any data on the system which must be preserved, copy it to floppy diskettes or otherwise back up the data before performing the following steps.

This step requires the Aptiva Product Recovery CD and the Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity which came with your system. Do not continue if you do not have both items.

1 Boot the system with the Aptiva Product Recovery CD
2 When you are prompted "Do you wish to restore the Aptiva software on your hard disk" type N for No.
3 Note that this command will erase all of the information on your hard drive. At the A:> prompt type format c: /u /c. Press the enter key after typing this command.
4 When prompted "Proceed with Format?". Press Y and then the enter key.
5 After the format has completed, you will be prompted for a volume name. Press enter to skip this.
6 Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart your system. Leave the Product Recovery CD in the system.
7 When you are prompted "Do you wish to restore the Aptiva software on your hard disk" type Y for Yes.
8 Read the license information and press Y to agree to the terms.
9 As all of the software on the system has been deleted, press Y to continue past the warning which now appears.

The recovery of the system software will now proceed. Once this has completed, follow the prompts to restart the system and set up Windows '98.

Step 3: Update the ALI IDE and AGP Drivers

This step requires updated IDE and AGP drivers. Please click here to download this update:

1 Boot the system into Windows '98
2 Click on 'Start', then click on 'Run...'
3 In the box labeled "Open:" type X:\Y\AGPIDE. (Replace X:\Y\ with the location of the file on your hard drive. e.g. C:\downloads\agpide )
4 Click 'OK'.
5 After the installation, click 'OK' to restart the system.

Note:
Your system is now up-to-date. Should it be necessary to restore the system software again, it will be necessary to perform part three again. Part one does not need to be performed again using this diskette.
