TP 600,770/ED - No modem audio after installing DirectX 5.0
Applicable to: World-Wide
SYMPTOM:
No modem sounds after installing DirectX 5.0
CONFIGURATION:
Any ThinkPad 600 or 770/ED with the ACP modem installed.
SOLUTION:
1. Click on Start ==> Settings ==> Control Panel ==> Add/Remove programs ==> DirectX Drivers ==> Restore Audio drivers.
2. When finished, you are prompted to reboot. After Windows 95/98 restarts, there will still be no modem audio.
3. Reinstall DirectX 5.0, and follow the recommendation not to replace the Crystal Audio drivers.
4. After reinstalling DirectX 5.0, restart Windows 95/98.
5. You will still not have modem audio. Next we need to remove the Crystal Audio drivers from the machine.
6. Delete the CWAUDIO .INF files found in \Windows\INF\Other directory
7. Remove the four Crystal devices in Device Manager. They are:
Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC
Crystal PnP Audio System Control Registers
Crystal PnP Audio System Joystick
Crystal PnP Audio System MPU-401 Compatible
8. Restart Windows 95/98. The operating system will then redetect the audio hardware.
9. When prompted, insert the Audio Features diskette for Windows 95/98 into the floppy drive. In the Copy files from field, type in A:\ and then click on OK. If you are running Windows 98, it will ask where you want to search for the appropriate driver. Click in the box next to Floppy Drive and remove the check mark from all the other choices.
