Servers - Migrating from PCI and Streaming RAID adapters to ServeRAID

Applicable to: World-Wide

It is possible to migrate to PC ServeRAID SCSI Adapter from older RAID adapters and still keep your current disk array configuration.

Migration is supported with the following adapters:

IBM SCSI-2 F/W PCI RAID Adapter
IBM SCSI-2 F/W Streaming RAID Adapter/A

Note: You cannot migrate from the Server 704 SCSI-2 F/W PCI RAID Adapter. Before attempting a migration, it would be a good idea to back up all vital data. In some cases this feature may not work and a warning message will appear on the screen. For example, the ServeRAID Adapter does not support LS (left symmetric) parity placement, which is supported on the PCI and Streaming RAID adapters. In these instances, you will not be able to use the migration function.

To migrate your configuration to a ServeRAID adapter, perform the following steps:

1. Verify that your previous disk array configuration is backed up.

2. Replace your adapter with a ServeRAID adapter.

Note: Because your ServeRAID adapter has three channels and your previous adapter has a maximum of two, you must ensure that the channels are connected in the same order before continuing. Refer to ServeRAID Adapter Installation Instructions and User's Guide for information on channels.

3. Start the ServeRAID Diskette Bootable Configuration Utility as described in ServeRAID Configuration Utility.

4. Select Advanced Functions from the main menu and press Enter.

5. Select Restore/Convert Saved Config and press Enter.

6. Insert the backup diskette in the disk drive and press Enter. A list of backup file names will appear.

7. Select the filename of the configuration on the diskette and press Enter.

8. Confirm the operation.

Note: You need to install the ServeRAID driver during the last shutdown of the operating system with the old adapter installed. Then, following the above instructions, physically swap the old RAID adapter for the new ServeRAID. Creating an Archive through Warp or an additional Hardware Profile with NT would allow you to revert to the previous adapter/driver in case the migration did not proceed as expected.
