4/8GB TR4 Internal EIDE Tape Drive - Backup fails under Windows NT 4.0
Applicable to: United States
Symptom:
Using Seagate Backup Exec for 95/NT, the backup will start normally. During the backup, TR4 tape drive activity stops, but the software appears to still be transfering files. The number of files transfered no longer increments. No error messages are displayed. Task Manager shows the backup is still running. If the customer attempts to cancel the backup, software responds by asking if customer is sure he wants to cancel. Regardless of the answer, nothing changes. Customer must perform End Task in Task Manager to stop the process.
Problem Isolation Aids:
- Operating system is Windows NT 4.0
- Tape backup device is Options by IBM TR4 4/8 GB Tape Backup IBM FRU 10L6039, P/N 06H9720.
- Device appears in SCSI devices list as STT 8000.
- Backup software is Backup Exec by Seagate (may be IBM version.)
Fix:
To correct this issue, remove the PIIX IDE drivers, and install the ATAPI drivers using the following procedure:
- Close any running applications.
- Select "My Computer".
- Open "Control Panel" folder.
- Invoke the "SCSI Adapters" applet.
- Click on the folder tab labeled "Drivers". The currently installed SCSI adapter drivers will be listed in the Drivers menu. The display should list the PIIX Bus Master IDE driver, "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller".
- Select the "Intel PIIX PCI Bus Master IDE Controller", then select "Remove" to remove the driver.
- Select "Add..." to add a new driver.
- From the "Install Driver dialog box, select "Standard mass storage controllers".
- In the SCSI Adapter dialog, select the default ATAPI driver, "IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/Dual-channel PCI IDE Controller" and click "Ok" to install the driver. (NOTE: this text may vary according to the release of Windows NT.) NOTE: Since this driver was previously installed on the system, a dialog box will appear that states that driver for the "IDE CD-ROM (ATAPI 1.2)/Dual-channel PCI IDE Controller" is already on the system. Select "Yes" to install the current copy of the driver already on the system.
- When prompted, reboot the system as directed in order for the changes to take effect.
