Aptiva - Before using STANDBY on your Windows 98 computer...

Applicable to: United States

NOTE: Check this page periodically for updated information regarding this topic !

After you unpack and set up your IBM Aptiva Personal Computer, follow the instructions in this document to avoid problems that might occur with combined use of power management options, telephony and fax programs, and Virtual Private Network technology.

Microsoft Windows 98 provides a power management option called "standby". Standby is designed to reduce your computerĘs power consumption when the computer is on but idle. You can put your computer on standby manually or set up your computer to go on standby automatically after a selected period of time. Your computer comes from the factory already set up to go on standby automatically. Your computer comes with a new software device, the Microsoft Virtual Private Networking adapter. This Virtual Private Network (VPN) device works in conjunction with your Internet service provider (ISP) software to let you establish a secure connection to a private local area network (LAN) through the
Internet. This device is not used for normal connection to your ISP.

With the Microsoft Virtual Private Networking adapter installed, however, a limitation in telephony and fax function can prevent your computer from running telephony and fax programs after the computer has gone on standby. If you let your computer go on standby, then telephony and fax programs, such as RingCentral and HyperTerminal, will not run properly until you shut down and restart the computer. Remove the Virtual Private Networking adapter from your system if you want to use your telephony and fax programs while your computer is unattended and on standby.

Removing the Microsoft Virtual Private Networking adapter
To remove the Microsoft Virtual Private Networking adapter, follow these steps:
1. Turn your computer on if it is not already on.
2. Close all open programs.
3. Click the Start button on your Windows 98 desktop.
4. Open the Settings menu and click Control Panel.
5. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Network icon.
6. Highlight the Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter network component.
7. Click the Remove button.
8. Highlight the Dial-Up Adapter #2 (VPN Support) network component.
9. Click the Remove button.
10. Click OK.
11. In the System Settings Change box, click Yes to restart your computer.

Obtaining software updates
IBM is continually providing updates for your Aptiva PC. For the most current updates and downloaded files, IBM recommends regular use of IBM Update Connector. IBM Update Connector is installed on your computer at the factory. Telephone line charges apply for Internet access provided through long distance access numbers.
