0301-101 mkboot_rs6k: device open failure /dev/tok0

Env:
  AIX 4.1 and 4.2
  Sysback 3.3.3.6
  RISC C20

Desc:
The customer sees this error message when he is trying to
create a token-ring boot image using sysback

  0301-101 mkboot_rs6k: device open failure /dev/tok0
bosboot: mkboot failed to create /tmp/..b_image

Action:
We traced this back to the 'mkboot_compress' function in bosboot

/usr/lib/boot/bin/mkboot_rs6k -d /dev/tok0 -b -N \\
   -k /tmp/unix_mp.strip -f /tmp/..bs_efs

Took a while to recreate this, but here is the reason.

1. At AIX 4.1 and 4.2, there is NOT suppose to be a network device in
/dev. AIX 4.1 and 4.2 does not use /dev entries for network devices,
and uses KERNEL calls for all communications services. Example
   /dev/tok0, /dev/tok1, /dev/ent0 ....

2. If there IS any /dev entry for a network device, then "mkboot" will
attempt to open it. Since AIX 4.1 and 4.2 does not use these devices,
then the error message above will display.

I had the customer remove the /dev/tok0 entry
This corrected the problem.

Next Action:
  Closing with customer approval
