Check to be sure that the drive is spinning up.  DEC drives do not spin up
automatically on powerup.  To check this, simply pull the drive out, plug it
into a live power adapter, and if you can hear it spin up (you will) then
that's OK.  If it doesn't, then you will need to set the spinup NVRAM bit in
the drive.  You will need some machine that can issue the SCSI command to do
it, I don't believe that there is a jumper for this.

I have an RZ23 running on an Adaptec just fine.  I never tried to use it spun
down, so I don't know if the error you got was a result of spinup problems or
not.
