All About Java(tm)

Q. What is Java anyway?

Java, a new programming language developed by Sun Microsystems Computer
Company, is primarily based upon the C++ programming language. It is designed
to support secure two-way, real-time interaction over networks such as the
Internet.

Using Java, software developers can write custom mini-applications called Java
applets. When integrated into Web pages delivered over the Internet, Java
applets allow expert graphics rendering, real-time interaction with users, live
information updating, and instant interaction with servers over the network.

Java applets are downloadable from any server. Because of the way the language
was designed, Java applets can run safely on any platform. Java provides
maximum security on public networks, with multiple safeguards against viruses,
tampering, and other threats.

Q. Where can I learn more about Java?

Sun maintains a World Wide Web page devoted to Java. It can be found at:

<http://java.sun.com>

There you will find a variety of documents providing more information about
Java. You may especially want to download the "Java Language Environment"
document as it provides a very comprehensive overview of the net environment
and the role that Java is expected to play in it. (Note: the file is only
available in either HTML or PostScript format. If you have a PostScript
printer, download the PostScript version and send it to your printer using a
PostScript Printer utility. It is a document about 90 pages long.

A comprehensive set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Java (updated
weekly) is also available. It can be found at:

<http://sunsite.unc.edu/javafaq/javafaq.html>

There's also a comprehensive set of Java resources available at:

<http://www.gamelan.com/>

Java is also discussed on a Usenet newsgroup:

comp.lang.java

GO USENET on CompuServe and then specify that specific group to read it.

A weekly Java newsletter is also available at:

<http://www.io.org/~mentor/J___Notes.html>

Q. What is HotJava(tm)?

HotJava(tm) is a modular, applet-aware, extensible World-Wide Web browser
written entirely in the Java programming languge. The current version of the
browser is Java release 1.0alpha3. It can be downloaded from:

<http://java.sun.com/download.html>

Q. What about Netscape support for Java?
