Content-Description: explanation

This is a pointer to the list of Frequently Asked Questions about
MIME, the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions.

 - MIME-capable mail user agents can use this message to obtain the FAQ
via WWW, Internet FTP, or mail server. MH 6.8, for example, can be
used to retrieve the FAQ as follows:

% mhn -list # To see what's in this message
% mhn -store -part 2.2 # To obtain the FAQ via FTP
% mhn -store -part 2.3 # To obtain the FAQ via mail server

If you need to use the mail server, you may want the FAQ to be
returned to you in a format other than MIME base64. To find out
more about the mail server, send a message whose body contains the
line "help" to the address "archive-server@ics.uci.edu".

The MIME FAQ file, mime-faq.txt.gz, is in GNU Zip compression
format. Use the "gunzip" program to unpack it.

 - Instructions on how to retrieve the MIME FAQ manually are given
in the next section of this message.

The MIME FAQ is posted monthly to comp.mail.mime and to news.answers.
This pointer is posted weekly to comp.mail.mime.

Content-Description: manual retrieval

Follow these instructions to obtain the MIME FAQ manually if your mail
user agent cannot be used to obtain the FAQ automatically.

 - Mosaic or another WWW client may be used to find an HTML
version of the FAQ at this URL:

   http://www.cs.ruu.nl/wais/html/na-dir/mail/mime-faq/.html

Plain text versions are available at these URLs:

   ftp://ftp.uu.net/usenet/news.answers/mail/mime-faq/
   ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet-by-group/news.answers/mail/mime-faq/
   ftp://ftp.ics.uci.edu/pub/mh/contrib/multimedia/mime-faq.txt.gz

 - The FAQ is available via anonymous FTP from various hosts,
   including these:

   ftp.uu.net:/usenet/news.answers/mail/mime-faq/*
   rtfm.mit.edu:/pub/usenet-by-group/news.answers/mail/mime-faq/*
   ftp.ics.uci.edu:/pub/mh/contrib/multimedia/mime-faq.txt.gz

If possible, please try to find a closer site; for example, by
asking archie for "mime-faq". Be sure to use binary mode when
transferring .gz (GNU Zip) files. You will need the GNU zip
program ("gzip -d", or "gunzip") to unpack the files.

 - To retrieve the FAQ by mail server, you may send a message whose
   body contains the line

     mimesend /pub/mh/contrib/multimedia mime-faq.txt.gz

(note the spaces) to the address "archive-server@ics.uci.edu".

To obtain help from the mail server, send a message whose body
contains the line "help" to the address "archive-server@ics.uci.edu".

Again, you will need the GNU zip program ("gzip -d", or "gunzip")
   to unpack the result.
