Your NMI might be disabled. The GUS' Windows MIDI port driver
relies on the NMI. To check whether your NMI is working, try
using SBOS. If it works, your NMI is also working.

The usual disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, but...

It is a common misconception that copying is only illegal if you make money off
it. I think it is fair to say that MIDI files are a fairly unexplored region of
copyright law. However, it is certainly illegal to, say, copy a rented video
tape even if you don't resell it. It's just less worthwhile for copyright
holders to go after these small violations.

The point is that by copying rather than buying, you are using the artists'
works and denying them the income they "should have" gotten for your use of
their work (since you "should have" bought the tape.)

MIDI files are kind of a funny case since most composers don't actually release
their work as MIDI files, and therefore the MIDI file was actually transcribed
by someone in the middle. Nonetheless, I believe they MIDI file is still
protected. After all, if you take THE CLIENT or THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER(book
versions) and copy them word-for-word by hand (or even paraphrase some of them),
the result is still protected.

Little known fact: Artists actually get paid for the use of records played on
radio stations, jazzercise classes, square dances, etc etc. This happens by the
fact groups such as I just mentioned must pay royalties to BMI and/or ASCAP,
organizations of composers and artists which figure out how to divy up royalties
among their member artists according to surveys they take of the popularity of
various songs. Perhaps something like this would be a good way to allow MIDI
files to circulate while still giving artists their due.

Subject: possible fix for NMI problem (Non Maskable Interrupt)

To make a long story short, I had problem with disabled NMI on my
motherboard. Because of that I couldn't use my synth as a MIDI IN's
source (as well as running SBOS). I just bought a new PC to replace the
old one. And you can imagine how upset I was to find out that the GUS
card (used to work on the old system) won't work on the new PC.

The "NMI procedure on this PC is disabled" was really getting on my
nerve. Well I decided to take a look at all the jumpers on motherboard
to see if there was any unusual setting. The only mismatch I found
out was the jumpers for "CPU Type Select" was set for 486DX. However
the CPU is a 486SX. So I corrected the jumpers and rebooted the
system. Phewwww..... No more anoying message "NMI ... disabled".
GUS MIDI IN is now working. The problem is solved.

For the people who are having this NMI problem, you may want to check
your motherboard again to see if this case applies to your system.
Don't trust the dealer who assembled you PC.

Subject: PowerChords Question

Is there a way in PowerChords to create sustained chord rhythm notes
that are played for more than one measure? Or better yet, is it
possible to "tie" identical chord rhythm constructs in adjacent measures
together? Thanks for any help.

I saw that in the relnotes too, but I think that it was describing a problem
which was fixed, not warning about a problem that may happen. It was a bit
unclear, that's for sure.
