In every digest today you're going to see a lot of (nearly)
empty messages, where the subject is "subscribe" or something like
that.

This means that someone wasn't paying attention.

YOU ***MUST*** SEND YOUR REQUESTS TO THE REQUEST LINE, NOT THE
NORMAL LINE. THE NORMAL LINE IS FOR POSTS ONLY.

If you tried to subscribe to a list and haven't received any
mail saying you've been added to the list, it's probably because you
sent your request to the wrong place. Try again.

Subject: GUSjam

Since NetJam has died, are there any interested GUSers
who might want to do something similar? The
standardization of software distributed through Gravis
would make it even easier. We could use .MID files, the
GM patch set, and even standardize on Session for the
software.

Even if it's just a bit of private e-mail, a GUS-based
jam session could turn into everything that NetJam was
supposed to be.

Drop me a line or post here if you are interested.

Thanks,
Hal Wadleigh

Subject: keyboards

Does anyone know where to get a basic midi keyboard (maybe with velocity
and pitch wheels). I don't need instruments (GUS will do me fine) on it,
just the midi capability. Also what sort of sizes are there? I would
love an 88 key keyboard but tat going to be a tad expensive - what sort
of prices for other sizes. I have red the file by Chris, but as I said,
I don't need a keyboard with instrument.

Lastly, does anyone know of a good score notation program for dos/windows
which outputs midi files - it doesn't have to support GUS. Midisoft is
not really powerful enough and not orientated enough towards notation
writing, its like having youre teeth pulled with that program :)
What range of prices am I lookiin g at?

Though I should get this digest going!

Howdy GUSicians!

My highest appreciation goes to all of you who supported the split. I am
pleased with the format and execution of this new digest (albeit, still
fervor the "audio" thing...). Most importantly, _thank_you_ Dave for
performing so swiftly! Back to business...

Okay, who's the resident Session genius??
I have learned that drum patches are fixed on midi channel 10, but when
assigning a track to ch. 10, then click the rec button for that track, I get
no sound from the keyboard (connected via midi in/out). If I start recording,
then play some keys, notes appear on the staff just fine, but there's no sound.
When the recording is played, the hard-drive spins for a while, and the sound
outputs just fine. It looks like the drum patches are loaded to the GUS
only after a play command is requested. Why don't they load when ch=10
and say, prog0 is selected for the particular track?!? (Am I missing
something here?) ==> consulted the help docs and found nothing useful...
Any help here would be appreciated.

BTW, I just invited some EE pals over last Sunday to show off the GUS. (One of
the characters is (was?) a die-hard SB16 freak, incidentally.) I played some
of the better mid's and mod's and a TZ demo. For the record, the sound was
was piped thru a JVC surround unit, two satellites and own home-made speakers
(~8.0 cu.ft, 200Wrms) and ALL FIVE of them agreed that they *NEVER*,
*ABSOULUTELY NEVER* heard a sound card so clean, (especially the SB guy!! HUH!
I'm betting the GUS base will grow by five!) Most of the stuff demoed
was off the 2.06 disks; yeah I know... passe... Makes me kinda wish I
had 2nd reality (soon). Say, if any of you are gonna show off your GUS with
the aid of a killer sound system, I recommend a line-level ground loop
isolator between the GUS and your amp. Some computer cases have questionable
grounding w.r.t. audio quality signals, and on my system, this is prevalent.
The isolator virtually eliminates level-shift hum. Get one at your local
Radio Trash (or fave' electronics guild) for under ten bucks (it's worth it!)

"...and to the victor goes the spoils!"

Subject: MPU401-compatibility

One I of the reasons I found the GUS an attractive sound card before
bying it, was the MPU401 compatibility. However, if I try the MPU401
midi drivers of the Midisoft Recording Session program, it won't work. I
do get good results using the ultrasound midi port through the windows
midimapper. Can anybody give me a hint to what is meant by
'MPU401 compatibility' ? Should I use some alternative settings of
ultrinit, or some other driver?

Does anyone know of a midi music program for dos or windows that will
allow me to compose my own music without having to use a keyboard
synthesiser? What I'm trying to say is that if there is a program that
would allow me to use my mouse or keyboard(typing one) to compose midi
music? Of course I'm using the GUS, so does anyone know of one? I tried
winmusic.zip, but I can't seem to get music out of it. Any help

Subject: Music FAQ ?

------------

Hi everyone.

Was just thinking that perhaps the GUS music digest should have its
own FAQ which is posted out to new subscribers?

I guess the only problem is, what's a Frequently Asked Question on a
newly created digest? My GUSmidi_shopping.FAQ or whatever it's called
is probably part of it, but there's plenty of other things.

I guess our span of topics is roughly:

- midi stuff
- gus patches
- recording in general
- mod files

Well, maybe we'd better wait and see...

Anyway, to start the ball rolling, I've got a not infrequently asked
question. Is anyone sure of the precise legality of copying samples from
commerical musical equipment and distributing them publically (via
internet site)? In particular, will I get dragged off and put in jail
if I go down to my local music store, hire a drum machine for the day,
sample all its sounds to my GUS, and then post them publically on epas?

Opinions, anyone?

Chris.

Is anybody home? Gee, it sure is quiet...no questions about SBOS

I think I'm going to like it here...

I've found out that the patch 909SD7 when set to position 100 in
ULTRASND.INI did not produce any sound when played with PatchManager.
However, when I changed the location from 100 to e.g. 27 all was well and
I could play the Snare Drum with the patch manager.

Can somebody explain this? Is the location of percusion patches in
ULTRASND.INI important ?

Subject: Windows, music, etc.

Greetings and salutations. As a musician i run the gamut of styles, from
acoustic blues to techno-thrash; i obviously focus on the latter with my
GUS. What sequencers are other GUS musicians using? I've got WinJammer
2.24 and am quickly outgrowing it. I'd like to find a sequencer that is
(1) more powerful, and (2) able to play WAV files at specified times along
with the MIDI stuff. It's been rumored that WinJammer Pro and Cakewalk
for Windows have this capability; it is true, and which should i buy?

Secondly there is the matter of samples. I've downloaded all the patches
i could find at wuarchive--are there different or better ones at epas?
I'll get around to uploading some samples and sample loops of my own in a
few weeks or so. It's great to use new sounds in my compositions . . .
I'm particularly interested in drum loops. I go for that fat Ice Cube/
NewOrder/SFC/Top Choice Clique sound . . .
