Subject: Specifications Needed.

Hi GUS owners,

Would some body please send me technical specification about
the GUS ability in sampling. I am interested in recording speech
and/or music by sampling then analyzing the results and playing
it back. I am not at all interested in synthesis. Will the GUS be
a better board for this job than the other boards.
Important considerations are: sampling rate, frequency response,
playback rate,...etc.

P.S. I am not a member of the mailing list, so please send email
to me directly.

  Thanks alot.

It's not that great. Try replying to one message? I think there should be a
digest for the people who don't want all the mail automagically... One
would subscribe to the digest with add-to-digest instead of add-to-list.

Subject: It's heeeere!

 Hello again,
As I mentioned in my previous post, my wife called GRAVIS in
California(1-800-254-4525) on Tuesday to cancel my GUS order, only
to find that my board had been shipped that day. I promised to let
you all know when it arrived (to maybe give you an idea when your
order might arrive). I ordered mine about Aug 17th and payed extra
for next day delivery. I seem to remember 4 to 6 weeks for regular
delivery! Anyway, it arrived yesterday(Wednesday) about 10:00am!
Yeah :)!
If your interested ... read on to hear my novice installation
experiences.

Oh, you're still here, OK ... first a little background. I'm new
to PC sound boards and MIDI inplimentations. I bought my first PC
about a year ago(a 386DX/33 clone, 4 meg, DOS 5.0, and Windows
3.1). The only hardware change I had made was to add a joy stick
card, so I'm basically new to the hardware game. I'm a 'sometimes'
guitarist, who thought it would be fun to compose music on the PC
and maybe play along with Band-In-A-Box(BIAB). BIAB is a program
that takes chord progressions as input and creates 4 part
arrangements that you can play along with ... if you have a sound
card! So, after reading about the GUS on this mail group and then
when I heard about the $99 offer while purchasing EA's Chuck Yeagar
Combat, I jumped on it(I believe the $99 offer ended on Sept 30th,
call GRAVIS to confirm).
As I said, I received the shipment yesterday. Someone previously
posted about the size of the box that GUS comes in. It looks like
you are getting lots of stuff. As it turns out, the box is larger
than it has to be, but don't be disappointed with the contents. You
get the GUS board, 2 small spiral bound books(one on the GUS and
one on USS 8), a pamphlet on the joy stick port, and 6 3.5" disks
with all the software. The GUS manual is basic enough for a
beginner like me to understand, but I would like to see more
details in future documentation.
The GUS board is much longer than the other boards in my PC. It's
about 11" long! The manual strongly advises installing it in a 16
bit bus(maybe for additional support?). If you attach speakers or
headphones to the board before installing the software, the setup
program will talk you through some steps. The ports for sound
input/output use stereo 1/8" jacks. To use the 2 watt amplified
output jack, I purchased a 'Y' shaped adapter to run 2 speakers
into the single stereo jack. The joy stick port is shared by the
MIDI port. To run MIDI, I will need to purchase an additional
Ultrasound MIDI adapter which will allow MIDI in/thru/out and joy
stick connections from the same adapter. When I bought
Band-In-A-Box, I was hoping that the GUS would support MPU401. It
appears GUS supports UART only. It would be nice to see MPU401
support in the future.
After reading the installation instructions, I started installing
the board. The GUS and the joy stick both need hardware addresses
so that the PC knows where to read and write to after installation.
The addresses can be modified to several different values by
rearranging some pins combinations on the board. I left the
factory defaults at 220(h?) for the GUS and 201h for the joy
stick. I removed the existing joy stick card in my PC, because the
manual warned that they may both be set to 201h and I didn't want
to play around with finding another unused address for the second
joy stick. I popped the top the PC and inserted the board into the
16 bit slot furthest from the video board, as recommended in the
manual. The fit was *very* snug! I was a bit worried about damaging
the mother board, but the GUS finally went in. I slid the PC top on,
connected the 'Y' adapter to the amplified port. I finished
connecting the other cables to the PC and fired up the PC. I
immediately heard a soft whistle/whine/static sound coming from the
speakers. "Hmmm ... I thought this was supposed to be a quiet
board" :(. I started to install the software, dispite the steady
noise coming from the speakers. After the setup program copied the
floppies to the hard drive, it displayed an error message that it
couldn't find the Ultrasound. It asked me to install the board ;^(.
I opened up the PC, removed the board, checked the pin settings to
confirm the addresses, and moved it to the next slot(closer to the
video board). Once I got the PC back together and restarted it,
the !#@%& noise was still there! I continued, hoping that it would
disappear after the software configuration. I restarted the setup
program and was greeted by a voice speaking through the static,
'Welcome to the Gravis installation program!' (or something to that
affect). "Well ... at least it knows where the board is" :). I
finished the setup program by defining the IRQs, etc.(I used the
suggested default values given in the program). I ran the MIDI
demo program to showcase the samples included with the software.
They sounded ..OK.. coming through the static. I wondered if I had
damaged the board by forcing it into the first slot. I turned off
the PC and picked up the manual again. I removed the 'Y' adapter
and compared it to the one pictured in the book. They were NOT the
same! I had a mono plug! The manual said that the mono plug could
damage the amplifier! I scrambled to find my walkman headphones
and attached them to the amplified port. The manual suggests using
headphones with volume controls ... I found out why. When I reran
the MIDI demo, the board was so quiet I couldn't tell it was on ...
until the music started! Then it could have blown my ears off! 8)
Yeah, that's more like it!
Well, there you have it. I hope this story helps some of you.
Needless to say, I'll be picking up a stereo 1/8" jack tonight on
the way home. The board is *very* quiet, the demos are OK, but I
suspect that the GUS has alot more to show off. I'll be sending in
my registration for the additional patches. Hope you get yours
soon!

  Have fun,
    Scott Bringen

	Sorry, it's done.

I apologize to anyone out there who doesn't like the new
format, but this makes things a LOT easier on me and the poor sysadmin
folk around here who have been getting copies of all the bounced mail.
This way, you have a lot less header(s) to read through, I get a lot
less bounced mail, bandwidth isn't wasted, etc., etc...

I can always change it to send more or less often depending on
volume. Currently, the digest is sent out once a day, at 2am mountain
standard time.

The windows driver doesn't load the patches if you don't use mediaplayer. It's
a definite bug.

Depends on the samples. If the samples are staticy, expect noise when you play
the game...

I also had problems with playdigi and playfile with two options:
loops (all garbled) and channels. (only with playdigi with channels since
you cannot use them with playfile). Anybody has had success with them? Which
software version do you have?

Also, where can I get such a program and how much would it cost (I will buy

	Folks...

I just put Gravis onto the list for receiving the digest. I
figure this has advantages both ways. They'll see these questions
eventually as they go from person to list to news to Gravis. Also,
since we're in digest style now, the volume of pieces of mail is low
(currently 1 per day).

Advanced Gravis Readers: If you don't want to get this, just
say so. Since I've forwarded so much mail from here already, I
thought I'd save time and just put you on the list.

The rest of you: Since all this is going to Gravis anyway,
please don't send questions to the list AND to Gravis. It's a waste
of their time and of everyone's bandwidth.

	Thanks!

Subject: SB driver emulation?

Hello:

I was wondering how the GUS reacts to DOS programs that load the
Sound Blaster CTVDSK.DRV driver. Does Gravis provide a similar driver
that application software can load?

What about programs that use the SBFMDRV.COM driver? Does the GUS
support playing CMF files and/or have an FM driver or TSR that emulates
SBFMDRV.COM?

Also, some programs look for the DOS BLASTER and SOUND environment
variables in order to know what IRQ and address the Sound Blaster is at.

Thanks,

I'm a true novice on the subject of sound cards so please bear with my
ignorance. I want to know if it's possible to mix different input "tracks"
together on the GUS. For example, suppose a record a song played on a piano
onto tape and then using the GUS audio input record it with the GUS. Can
I also record vocals through the same method and then merge them together?

I realise this can probably be done through MIDI but can it also be done
through the audio port? I can live with "adequate" sound.

OK everyone, more replies to questions from Alan of Gravis....

1 )

Question:
---------
After loading SBOS in DOS, if you then run Windows 3.1, not only does
the sounds not sound right anymore, if you try to use a player like Media
Player to play somthing, it says that all the devices that can play .wav
(for example) is in use. And if you have defined a sound for exiting Windows,
Windows hang and won't let you exit. Everything is fine if you run Windows
right after a boot without loading SBOS.

Reply:
------
Could not duplicate this on my 486/33 w/MAX386. It is
also not evident from the tech calls received. Something
was not installed correctly. Here is the shure-fire 'Shotgun'
'take no prisoners' cure-all:

Completely remove all UltraSound files, *especially* those
that were moved from their original directories. Re-Install
the 6 disk set using the default directories.

Remove the UltraSound Windows drivers completely, restart Windows.
Before you add the UlraSound drivers, make sure you have the
standard four Windows MCI and MME drivers normally put there
when you installed Windows 3.1: TIMER, MIDI Mapper,
[MCI] MIDI Sequencer, and [MCI] Sound. Now ADD the UltraSound
drivers from your\ULTRASND\WINDOWS directory (select NEW drivers,
do not use the 'current' drivers).

Make sure you have moved \ULTRASND\WINDOWS\MIDIMAP.CFG to
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory as per the ReadMe file.

If the problem persists, call me and we will diagnose a possible
DMA conflict, initialization problem, loose menory chip, brain
injury, or other problem.

2 )

Question:
---------
As I have mentioned before, we are now playing with MIDI files done
with Rolands, Turtle Beach....etc. ie. other soundcards. What we are finding
are first, error saying certain patches are missing which is fine because
we are supposed to get new patches after we register (hhmm... wonder when
mine are coming... <heehee> ). But we also get a lot of error with something
ike.... program #23 not found for channel 5, for example, where the numbers
are arbitrary. What does this mean?

Reply:
------
Yes, we are hard at work on the General Midi Patch set; won't
be too long now (you want them to sound *great* right? <g>).
Those 'Program #x not found for channel x' messages are MIDI
patch changes that did not find a patch to play. If you want,
you can substitue a patch that IS there (any one!). This is
a fun way to alter playback of a midi file from DOS that only
GUS offers. Here's how it works:

- PlayMidi parses each .MID file, finds patch changes, and loads
them by GM number, BUT if Playmidi finds a .CFG file with the same
name as the .MID file, it loads THOSE patches by name, no matter
what number is attached. (see PLAYMIDI.DOC for details) You can
create a new .CFG file or 'borrow' one from a similar sounding
.MID, and customize it. You can 'reverse engeneer' any .MID file
by noteing all the 'Program #x not found...' messages, and
inserting a refrenceto that Program #x in the .CFG for each one.
Do them one at a time, at first, so that you can 'see' what you
are doing. Here's an example:

I run - PlayMidi Whatsong

I get this - 'Warning: couldn't find program 188 to put on channel 6'

Ok, Here is my WhatSong.CFG:	0 acpiano1.pat
				1 acpiano1.pat
				129 percs.pat
				65 altosax.pat
I add the new line	>>	118 acbass.pat

Next time I run PlayMidi WhatSong, that particular message doen't
appear. You will see the message for each patch change not assigned
to a .PAT name.

Just ignore the 'channel x' part. Please note that each .CFG HAS to
have the '0' xxxxxx.pat (doesn't matter what .PAT you use, but use
one that you already need loaded), and will need the '129 PERCS.PAT
most of the time. A message will tell you if you do. All the .CFG
stuff changed before we shipped, so I hope I have it right. See the
PlayMidi.DOC file for details on how to change other parameters such
as Volume, Pan, transposition and pitch, etc.

Actually, now that I think of it, the LATEST playmidi (will be released
soon) runs any .MID file just by typing - 'PlayMidi YourFile' with no
.mid extension or anything. It has a built in DEFAULT.CFG that has all
the currently available patches mapped in. Current versions may need
to be able to find DEFAULT.CFG I think.

3 )

Question:
---------
We tried playing the midi files from the mididemo that came with
the card using Media Player from Windows 3.1. It first comes up to
say that the Ultrasound is not setup to play these files correctly,
then of course the files don't sound right. But of course they sound ok
using PLAYMIDI that came with the card. What do we need to setup in Windows?
Should there be an addendum to the README.BAT or manual?

Reply:
------
See problem #1. Also, keep the original installed directories, and
directory names intact to avoid problems and to aid diagnosis. DO NOT
arbitrarily move any files to new directories, except as noted in the
read me file. One of the most popular things to do seems to be to move
the file ULTRAWIN.CFG into the WINDOWS directory. I guess its like the
Moth to the Lightbulb syndrome. Unfortunately, Windows needs to find
this file in the \ULTRASND DIRECTORY ONLY or it will not find the .PAT
files. I know this is off the topic but I just had to say something
about this before I go nutZ. I get several call a day on that one.
You DO need to move MIDIMAP.CFG from \ULTRASND\WINDOWS directory to
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM as stated before (or your MIDI files will sound 'funny').

4 )

Question:
---------
We know you will be adding more info for future releases of the manual
and perhaps the readme file. Things like the info above sothat we can
use the board correctly. Are these pages being written as addendums?
Extra chapters? etc... Can you put them in Postscript form or some such
so that whenever they are done, I can distribute it to others, or even
plain text file would do. We just need the info to use the board now
that you are hearing about all the problems we are finding lacking in
the manuals. We would't mind getting these info without having to buy
the next version of the Ultrasound card to get the manual to learn to
use the current version of the card which we now own. <grin>

Reply:
------
Yes, we realized the manual and addendum shipped were lacking. Our
Official Excuse is that we did not know exactly how the 'Shipping'
software was going to work 'cause we got it the morning we shipped.
We did a Major Rewrite to the manual, which is at the printers now.
There is now a 'several' page section on Windows and MIDI written by
yours truly instead of the skinny paragraph or two before. I will post
it to our CIS PCVENB forum lib 14 for distribution, thanks for the
suggestion!

[I'll probably get it from him and post it to the mailing list as
well... when it's done. Or at least to the mailserver - Thomas ]

BTW, stay tuned for interesting new developments!

Subject: 16 bit instruments for GUS. My sources.

Ok,

To reply to all the requests:

1- I managed to emulate some Yamaha DX-7 patches and produce some 16 bit
samples with a wave and music description tool. It's called Csound and can
be found on cecelia.media-lab.mit.edu. If you have access to a Unix machine
take the executables, sources, examples and doc from there. If you would
rather use it in a DOS (text) system, you'll have to get the executables
from bath.ac.uk and get the documentation, examples and tutor files from
cecelia. The doc is either in ps or in Macintosh Word 4.0. I managed to read
it with Word 2.0 for windows. If any of you have problems getting a working
package, email me.

2- Somebody also asked if he could use his dx7 patch dumps ( i suppose it's
the 4096 byte dump with 32 patches, 128 bytes/patches). Well, if i can get the
info on the format (ie byte 7:fmop1, 8:fmop2, 9: ... you get the idea) i'll
be able to do a program that translates these patches in Csound orc files.

3- Another asked if there were other sources of samples... Well there are
several other wave generators. You'll have to dig for them. One of *my*
source is an EPS16+ keyboard. I've managed to extract EPS16+ Individual
Instrument Files from EPS16+ disks. I have not totally figured out the
IIF format (file type 3) but i'm working on it.

4- Yet another person wanted to know if he could hear the .pat with playfile.
No problem. Use playfile -16 -o1 name.pat
This is the minimum options. If you wanna skip the first header use -o335
instead of -o1. (the samples are on a odd offset, after a general patch header,
some pointers, and for each instruments if multisampled, there is a 96 bytes
additional header).
BTW, the .pat are from EYE&I prod. a company who does EPS-16+ samples disks.
Also, to play Csound samples use -h -s to generate raw 16 bit. Playback with:
playfile -2 -16 -o1 name.snd
Again, if you have any questions, dont be shy.

5- Haha. Now you are wondering: Will we be able to use some 16 bit samples as
patches? Well, not yet. I'm also working on finding the format. My HP 48s has
never been this busy! If any of you are also looking at this, email me.

6- Still there? Another person asked me after i replied on the -2 -16 etc...
options of playfile, if there was a way to make the change permanently. i.e.
to change signed int to unsigned int, ulaw to unsigned, 16 to 8 bits, 22050
to 11025, 44100 to 22050 etc... Good news for you: you can use SOX. Best
sound format exchanger. Support .wav, raw, signed, unsigned, 8, 16, 32,
floats, ulaw, alaw, aiff?, 8svx, voc etc... It's probably on wuarchive. Get
sox4e.

7- Not finished yet... If you have some disk dumps, instrument files or
other sysex dumps or whatever of samplers, get in touch... I'll try to
convert those also so we can have almost infinite quantity of quality patches.

8- As you can see we'll definitely need an FTP site! (I have megabytes of
EPS instruments that will be in GUS patch format in the near future, and all
PD).

9- Request for midi files: the site was posted two days ago. Please stop
requesting them from me...

Speaking of the devil: i tried to use the midi port... How am i supposed
to select it? I have Ultra and some SBP things defined ( how come SBPro
drivers are in midi mapper?). How can i select external midi connector?
Now, i know midi in doesn't work because Gravis said so, but what about
the midi out? Which brings to mind another point or two:

10- Midi cable. I have built one, but have not been able to test it yet.

11- Developper kit: i will receive one in the near future which means that
i wont be able to give any more informations on certain points... But i'll
finish the patch format, midi cable and anything that's important for you
before i get the kit, so it can be considered "publicly know information".
For the Unix driver, i'll have one in source form, but it will be licensed so
i'll be protected in regard to the non disclosure agreement (i talked to
Brad Craig, and he was very cooperative on that point).

Last, i have a question. Is Gravis saying that the windows driver is working??
If so, what's the latest version? My version doesn't respond to program
changes with any application with the exception of mediaplayer. And even with
mediaplayer, the sound is pretty fucked up... (Yes i erased everything,
reinstalled and moved the file as said in the readme. But nothing different...)

Did i forgot something? Remind me if i did...

Ciao,
