Ok... I received it today; I have an UltraSound V2.2. On the box it says
`Ultrasound Card Required For v2.4/v3.4/v3.7'? When I try to plug it into
the UltraSound, C57 on the UltraSound collides with the bank of C4, C5, C9
and C23 on the DB. Do I need a different board for V2.2? The capacitor
doesn't want to bend over; C57 is right in the middle of the bank of the
other four on the DB.

Thanks in advance,

Surprise again! The Media Player can play CD orange-book stuff if the CD driver
is installed. Poke around in the Driver applet in the control panel.

Ummm, Surprise... incorrect! I've used Media Player to run my cdrom
and it works fine. You just go into the devices menu and select CD
audio.

Surprise!! Media Player does many things included as a CD Audio player.
Just install the CD AUDIO MCI driver, and it will play any CD audio.

Hi

When you run Windows Media Player, click the Device menu. If you
have set up the cdrom in windows correctly you should see CD Audio
as one of the devices. If you don't see that, the way to set the cdrom
up is:

1. Run Control Panel
2. Click the Drivers icon
3. Press Add...
4. Click the MCI CD Audio option
5. Windows will probably ask for one of it's installation disks
6. Then, you should get the message something like "CD device
found. Redbook installation complete"
7. Go to media player and check if CD audio is installed as one of
the devices

And as they say... Happy GUSing!

Subject: CGW "blind tests"

In response to an article posted by mrogers@afit.af.mil
about "blind test" comparisons of various sound cards,
I question CGW's testing system and the software they used.
I bought an Aria sound card before (and after!) my GUS. It's
a long story, but I don't have an Aria anymore. The Aria had 512K
of samples in ROM and no RAM for onboard samples. MIDI songs
sounded absolutely horrendous. Not only was the Aria's amp of
lower quality, the samples were barely better than FM
synthesized garbage. I can't speak for the other wavetable
cards, but the GUS is definitely better than the Aria 512K.
CGW must have tested the GUS entirely using SBOS, or the
tested subjects were paid off by Sierra Semiconductor.

The mouse driver I'm using is Microsoft v9.01 (mouse.exe). It came with
the Gateway system. Curiously enough, the same driver works when used with
a serial mouse and only misbehaves with a bus mouse.

I've heard some suggestions that an earlier version of the mouse driver may
help the problem, but I've been unable to locate anything older. I may have
tried a Genius mouse driver at one point, but I don't remember what version it
was. I would be interested in hearing if anyone had solved the problem this
way.

Subject: general questions on GUS

Hi,

I bought the GUS over the weekend. Right now I am totally
fascinated by the crystal clear sound.

My board version is 3.4. There are 2 internal audio connectors
on the board - 3 pin and 4 pin respectively.

Questions:
1. Can you use only one of the internal connectors?
2. Does anyone have a pin-out diagram describing each connector?

I would like a audio cable from the Mitsumi CD-ROM to the GUS.
Currently the cable is hooked to the interface card.
I think the audio cable provided by the CD-ROM is lousy because
the output from the CD-ROM interface card has lot of hum (when
hooked to my home stereo). Any suggestions on where I could get a
good audio cable to connect the Mitsumi CD-ROM and the GUS.

  Thanks a lot.
  Arun

The gus0041 installation doesn't delete any files, so if you don't have
tremstr.pat now, then you've never had it. Likely, a new default.cfg
was copied over which mentions tremstr.pat, while your old default.cfg
used marcato.pat in its place. Tremstr.pat can be found in gus0034.zip,
which, in turn, can be found on the usual sites in ../gravis/patches.

> 2) The gunshot still sounds like a ring whistle; how do I remedy this one?

Grab guns.zip and copy pistol.pat over top of ringwhsl.pat.

Don't bother. The "32 channels in DOOM/Raptor" business is a red herring.

Supposedly, iD are working on a v1.3.

Download gail3214.zip from the GUS archive mirrors (listed at the end

GUS support.

The GUS doesn't do MPEG compression on board. Don't believe everything
you read, especially if what you read is sourced from PC Mag. :)

The GF1 is a DSP, but it's not programmable. It single-mindedly goes
about synthesizing waveforms and can't be made to do anything else.

Pops on power-up and initialization are the norm (especially power-ups)
for audio equipment.

What's causing it is the surge that accompanies the closing of a
previously open circuit. You can't do anything about it, except
making sure that your speakers/amp are the last things you turn
on.

The simple solution is to not load ultrinit.sys at all. It's not
needed by any piece of software I'm aware of. Or you can try
removing the devicehigh business since ultrinit.sys isn't a TSR.

Phat.

oops. That was meant to be 0x2A0 for the answering maching, and it only
takes it up to 0x2A7. There shouldn't be any kind of interference from
them. I've removed the ultrasound drivers from windows (the gus0041
version) and found that the problem goes away. I will try to find updated
drivers somewhere which do not do this on my system, or try to download
the drivers from pmak110 and see if the problem goes away WITH the drivers

Actually, it will! If you have installed the MCI CD-Audio driver off
your windows disks, media player will support cd-audio, and you will be
able to play music off your cd-rom. It does not provide a very nice
interface for cd-audio, but it does work.

I have downloaded MOO_GUS.zip and followed the instructions to the letter yet mysystem still crashes. I have tried changing Ultrasnd IRQ but it never passes
the test of setgus. It always gives me some weird remark about not finding the
sbos vector or a failure to detect this or that. Anyone have any suggestions?

that.

Surprise again to the above surpriser! Media Player does have an option
to play CD audio, but only if you've installed the driver for it. Go
under drivers in Control Panel, and there should be a driver titled
"[MCI] CD Audio" along with other [MCI] drivers that came with Windows.
If it's not there, try to reinstall install Windows (v3.1 is what I have).

WHAT?!??! I can go into Media Player right now, select CD Audio under
type, and play audio CD's to my heart's content...

The Media Player in Windows CAN be used as a simple CD-audio controller.
Just install the CD-Audio driver that comes on the Windows 3.1 disks. All
decent CD-ROM drivers should support the audio control API, so it should
work fine. All you get is play, pause, track forward, track back, and
stop, but that's all you really need.

Probably one of thousands of messages today to say "Oh yes it is!".
The usual reason for it not offering CD-Audio as one of the Media
choices is that the [MCI] CD Audio driver has not been installed
in Control Panel/Drivers. The driver is on the Windows disks, but
may not be installed unless you had a CD-drive when Windows was
installed.

Certainly you can get other programs which make your screen look like
the control panel of a CD Player, but Media Player does the job,
as it does also with 'Media' not requiring a physical device, such
as .WAV, .MID, .AVI (video), and MicroSoft animation thingies which
come with Encarta and whose file extension I cannot remember.

Well for those waiting for Megaem to be modified to work with NWDOS 7 (Novell),
you can use QEMM from Quarterdeck. Its cheaper than buying a Sound Blaster,
maybe. At least it doesn't take up a memory slot.

Hey Mark!

Did a little digging... a few phone calls.... heres what I turned up

The Gravis drivers were finished about 3 weeks ago but as
yet have not been officially QAed. There was some delay to smooth out
some tech issues. Hopefully the QA process will be quick.

I have a call to the QA dept now.... I'll let ya know if I hear anything.

Keep on Gaming!
