One of the easiest ways around that problem is to just load the 15 sample
mods into a modeditor such as ModEdit or ScreamTrakker and just resave
the mod. I think most of the popular modeditors will save older mod
files in the 31 sample format. There may even be a program that just
does the conversion directly if my memory serves me right, but the name
of the program escapes me now.

CHARTERS

comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.games

Unmoderated discussion of using IBM-PC compatible games with a
specific soundcard, resolving compatibility problems of a certain
soundcard with a particular game, discussing campaigns at software
groups to have more native soundcard support, questions if a
particular game supports a certain soundcard, and questions on
which soundcard is best for a particular game or all games in
    general.

comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.music

Unmoderated discussion of software that plays back and record
sound and music files, music formats such as WAV, VOC, MIDI, MOD,
STM, 669, ULT, ROL, etc., resolving problems with musical
software, discussing which software or hardware is best for a
particular musical or sound project, and questions concerning
    sampling or sound patch making.

comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.tech

Unmoderated discussion of questions concerning programming a
particular soundcard, discussing hardware problems such as loss of
sound from a particular channel, discussing the pros and cons of a
particular sound generation scheme, questions on the compatibility
of the soundcard to a particular computer type, operating system,
and peripheral such as a CD-ROM drive, questions about the
functionality of a particular soundcard, and resolving hardware
    problems.

comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.advocacy

Unmoderated discussion of the pros and cons of soundcards in
general. This discussion will possibly overlap some discussions on
the other soundcard groups. Also reviews of soundcards and future
opinions and tests of soundcards will be placed in this group to
    be discussed by the users.

comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.misc

Unmoderated discussion of topics concerning soundcard hardware and
software that is outside of the above mentioned topics. These
could include upcoming product release or updates for soundcard
software. (This group would supersede the existing group
    comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.)

JUSTIFICATION:

The sudden increase in the volume of messages posted to the group
comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard has caused the suggestion of splitting the
group to appear. Many users on the group have expressed interest
in dividing the group because the topics listed on the group are
varied tremendously. Having approximately 200+ new messages a day
on this group is expensive to some users who must pay for the
receiving the usenet group based upon amount of information as well
as paying for the amount of time needed to sort through all of the
messages. Currently, a heated debate is present on the c.s.i.p.s
group which is disrupting those users more interested in new software
and problems. They have expressed concern that some are not able to
keep up with all of the traffic and decided that
by splitting the group, this would allow them to read the messages
relevant to their interests pertaining to their soundcard.

The comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.GUS is unrecognized usenet group
throughout many news servers. Therefore, to avoid confusion and to
reorganize the entire soundcard group, this illegal group must be
eliminated. Many GUS users are satisfied with removing this group
and using the four above mentioned subgroups.

There was also concern about where this group should be located, under
the comp.syd.ibm.pc hierarchy or comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware hierarchy.
It has been decided to leave the soundcard subgroups under the
former mentioned hierarchy to prevent any problems with news servers
and provides with usenet groups with seven level names. Also, the
        transition would be less disturbing.

RATIONALE:

The idea of spliting the group was tossed around the c.s.i.p.s
group many times. However, no action was ever taken. It is hoped
that finally with the dramatic increase in messages, that this
reorganization would make the group more efficient and easier to
use. Questions had to be raised about add another group, a
c.s.i.p.soundcard.GUS group which would handle all topics
specific to the Gravis Ultrasound card. Presently, a majority of
messages on the group is concerned with this card. Now with the
a 100 message increase because of a heated debate (flame war?)
the rational users want the group to be split. This eventually let to
a group discussion about splitting up the soundcard group based upon
the particular cards discussed, such as the Ultrasound, Soundblaster,
Pro Audio Spectrum, etc. However, further discussion revealed that a
majority thought that such a split would be short term due to the
possibility of an unexpected loss of interest in a particular product.
Therefore, because of the prospect of new soundcards being released
that would increase the number of messages to the group, the prospect
of more pc users of becoming involved in the multimedia revolution,
and the steadily increase in messages in this group, it was decided
that the group should be split based upon the topics mentioned above.

The games group was chosen because a great number of posts on the
soundcard group are concerned with how to use a particular soundcard
with a particular game and what soundcard is best to use with game.
Many users were concerned that the group was overrun with posts
concerning how to get a particular game to work with a particular
soundcard. They had to try to sift through the 200+ message a day
to look for non-game compatibility messages. Therefore,
the music group was also chosen because the other large part of
message is related to the production of music. These include what
programs can use a particular music format, and what programs exist
to create programs. Also, in this group is the topic of sounds
such as digitizing sound bytes and songs. A separate group was not
created because many of the problems and solutions concerning
recording or playing back sounds is related to the music production
scene. The tech section was chosen because many users occasionally
have questions about the technical aspect of soundcard, such as
the pros and cons on how a soundcard generates sounds. Also,
any hardware problems and compatibility would be discussed. But
most importantly, the advocacy group would handle the bulk of the
soundcard debate and keep it away from those more concerned
with games or music. Finally, the misc group would be concerned with
any topic or discussion outside of the above mentioned groups. This
group is need to provide some kind of order in the other groups.
Posting messages not really relevant to a particular group would cause
an increase in traffic where it is not needed. As evident from other
groups that have split, the misc section is used often. Possibly, by
posting to the misc group, the message could be sent to the proper
subgroup.Such a split would try to evenly distribute the
messages throughout the sub groups. Most agree that sorting through
50+ is cheaper and less time-consuming.

The AWE has 11MB of patches compressed using some lossy format into 1MB. 11MB
may sound like hoo-hah, but remember that only the GUS can do interpolation
(so they do it in software) and when you compress stuff 11:1 it comes out
yucky.
The BIGGEST caveat of the AWE32 IMHO is that it can only be downloaded patches
via MIDI sample dumps (or whatever they're called). This means you'd have to
wait about 15 minutes per meg to get the data going.
Emulation of stuff on the AWE32 is worse than on the GUS since CL is only the
first time through this software support thingie. I believe its at 60K of
TSRs at this current point.

I have GUS and SBPro in my computer. Some games (like Alone in the Dark 2)

I'm still using GUS software version 2.06a, I think the new 3.11 will solve

It has been fixed in the new Epic Pinball. You can get the file epicpn2.zip

Well, the old Epic Pinball (released last year) had a bug in
the sound code which caused it not to work correctly with the GUS.
Epic has just released (a few days ago) a new version of the game
(grab the shareware version at ftp.uml.edu /msdos/Games/Epic) which
works perfectly with the GUS. Not only does it work, it has a suped
up table called Super Android, and Josh Jensen's MASI *surround sound*
system. VERY nice. I just ordered the third pinball back and the
MASI upgrade for the first two packs I already own.

Yes, the GUS will happily co-exist with a dedicated MIDI card. Howev=

I use Cakewalk Pro 2.x and have one output defined as the MIDI

Nah, MIDI in uses whatever IRQ you have the MIDI card set to. NMI is=
 used
mainly for parity errors, but can be used for other things, too.

In fact, the IRQ on the MIDI port is only used for input data, so it =
makes
sense that, if you have an IRQ problem, it's only going to pop up on =
MIDI
input.

> Does anyone know what the problem is?

This sounds like an IRQ conflict or a device driver conflict to me.

Are you sure you don't have the Windows MPU-401 driver loaded? You
should use only the GUS software with the GUS.

Also, I'd stay away from IRQ 2/9 (if you're using it). That's reserv=
ed
for EGA functionality (typically backward compatibility for older
software), but I've had trouble using that IRQ even when I knew my
video card wasn't configured to use it (I don't need it).

ws

Again, this kind of strange behavior sounds like device driver confli=
cts
or hardware conflicts. If you make it a habit to load SBOS at every =
boot,
I'd stop doing that. I only load SBOS when needed (not very often).

Propats are a collection of large (very large) patches that can
be used in place of the ones that are supplied with the GUS. These
patches have obviously been lovingly put together by someone who
cares more about the sound of music than the practicality of the fact
that the GUS has only 1meg of memory. Most of the propats use .25 to
5 meg, thus leaving room for 2 or 3 instruments. By contrast the
typical patches supplied with the GUS are 10k-60k. The supplied
patches are acceptable in a wide variety of uses, but for real music
they tend to be lame - listen to the Grand Piano. The initial hit
sounds OK, but the decay is awful - it shoulds like a $30 casio.
The propat version of Grand Piano sounds just like a GP from low
notes to high - it's amazing.

I know that I speak for most in the Music digest when I state that
these propats are the best reason around to get a GUS with more
memory.

"Voiceooh.pat" is an error in the .ini files for RTZ. What the gus ha=
s is=20
doo.pat. So you must copy doo.pat voiceooh.pat, so you will have the =
same=20
patch named as both doo.pat and voiceooh.pat

Clear as mud? Good....

First, I would like to say 'thank you' to the one who make a phon=
e
call for me about purchasing GUS. I have a version 3.7 GUS instal=
led
on my 386 DX-33 almost ten days. At most time it does a nice job w=
ithout
any problem. But sometimes it performs oddly. And I try to solve t=
he
problem. Followings are some of my experiences: (hope it will help=
)

    1. The music of EPIC Pinball is excellent, but the sound effect i=
s always
not continuous. After I change my system clock speed from SCL=
K/5
to SCLK/8 , the problem all disappear. Also, I find that the=
 sound
effect always come from left speaker and music always come fr=
om right
speaker. I used a SBPRO with this game before ,and the sound =
come
from which speaker depends on which ramp you hit. It's a good=
 idea,
but I don't know why the author doesn't adopt this idea when =
he wrote
        the program for GUS!?

    2. I try to install Microsoft Works CD title using a double speed=
 Mitsumi
FX001D ,but when I run the demo the sound stop after 5 second=
s. I
thought it was hang. But after I open the CD door ,it says so=
mething
like this 'can not read d:' (d: is my CDROM). Then I closed t=
he door
and double click the mouse on 'retry' button. And the BUSY LE=
D of
CDROM lights up again. But after few seconds pass it stop aga=
in.
I do the procedure above again and again, and it runs intermi=
ttenly.
        I allocate DMA7&IRQ7 for GUS and DMA5&IRQ10 for Mitsumi. I th=
ink maybe
Windows 3.1 don't know IRQs larger than 7, and I change IRQ o=
f Mitsumi
to 3. It's also not of use. Then I change DMA of GUS to 1 an=
d it runs
smoothly but sounded weird and robotic! At last, I adapt DMA =
of GUS
to 6. Increditably ,the sound is so clear and no more problem=
 again!
My friend finds one thing that when he plays CD audio and run=
s playmidi
at the same time ,CDROM will be stopped (He use the same bran=
d and
version of CDROM and GUS as mine). I think both these two pro=
blems
may be resulted from conflicted DMA between CDROM and GUS. Is=
 there
anyone having any opinion about this ?
note: I bought a CD title named 'Great cities of the world vo=
l.1&2'
yesterday ,and had problem like this. Since I couldn't=
 solve
this problem at that time, I returned it back. So I do=
n't
know if it resulted from the same reason as 'Works'.
And I haven't tried other CD titles ....

    3. I find these lines in system.ini of windows:
        [ultrasnd]   ...   codec_base==0 codec_dma==0 codec_int==0   =
 ..
Does anybody know the function of these lines ? I have changed=
 the
values of these lines ,but it seems that nothing changed!

        Best wishes,
        Ni, Jindi

Hi Gussers !
=20
Here's my problem: I get lockups with 3 of my favourite games: Doom(=
1.2),
Raptor and the new Epic pinball (the one with the Super Android tabl=
e).=20
With the first 2 games I thought the problem was the dos4gw=20
dos-extender or the gus soundcode. Then I had the same problem=20
with EP (which doesn't use dos4gw) . So i came to the (false) conclu=
sion=20
that it had to be the GUS: Because when I played the games with NO s=
ound, I=20
still had (and have) those lockups. Then i began changing my bios se=
tup.=20
 But...to no avail.=20
Please help me ;-) , perhaps i have overlooked something.
I have a 486-40 ( Opti) VLB motherboard with the coloured AMI bios
 (11.11.92). I use a VLB controller and a ordinary ET 4000 card.
No other "special" hardware is present, beside the GUS ;-) .
So do I have to buy a new motherboard or is there a cheaper solution=
 ?=20
 Thankx...Olli
