need V8 #14, just a few days ago (it kept crashing my system and I had to

	Remove the old GUS drivers.

	Restart Windows.

	Install new.

I don't think it is documented (I didn't check), but you have to

Well, MegaEm works great. I found the only problem to be with the game
"The Legacy". If I pick Roland Music and SB digital, the game plays the
intro with music, but no SFX, Then locks up. If I pick just the Roland,
the Game goes through the intro with music (No SFX on purpose this time.)
The title screens and load games screens don't have music though. When The
game actually starts, there is no music. I checked the options box and
MUSIC was greyed out, which means It decided that there was no longer a
sound card present.

Subject: Mega Em's DAC

For some odd reason the new Mega Em's DAC feature isn't working on my computer.
The GMIDI/Sound Canvas works awesome alone. But when I try to use both, it
gives me a full memory dump of sound. The situation happens with multiple
products (XWING, Stunt Island, Might and Magic 3, etc.). My friend who lives
across the hall also owns a GUS and his works fine with SC/DAC. I have tried
to change all sorts of software configurations. I have changed EMM386 around,
I tried using SETGUS again, I tried a very minimal configuration, changed from
DMA 5 to DMA 1, move the games to another directory, tried it using MT instead
of SC, tried the -NOEMS switch, and it all goes the same. His works mine doesn't. I have a felling it could be hardware related. I have a Gateway 2000
486DX2/66, 1 MB GUS, and ATI Ultra Graphics Pro VLB (MACH32). Everthing else
works on my GUS (native, Windows, SBOS, old MegaEm, etc.). Maybe this is why
it is a beta release. I bought my card last January. I took the risk and am
damn proud that I did. Please help me.

I'll take quality versus support and day of the week.

Subject: Megaem 2.0023b and SBOS 2.08 problems

I have two problems to discuss, one with SBOS and one with Megaem 2.0023b.

Using SBOS 2.08 with High Command (released by 360 Pacific, written by
Colorado Computer...), when the national anthems play I get an annoying
off-pitch loud triangle type sound where I should be getting a soft cymbal
hit (don't know if "hit" is the correct term, but on a SBPro it's some sort
of cymbal sound). Any ideas what to do here?

My problem with Megaem 2.0023b in X-Wing is this:

When I press "r" or "t" to get a new target, the display freezes for up
to a second. I think the game is continuing on, because the display
jerks and catches up in a single bound to where it might be expected
to have ended up if it hadn't frozen for the second.

I had similar problems with the unregistered version of Megaem 1.00, but
not with the "registered" version of 1.00. The "registered" version flew
very smoothly while changing targets.

My suspicion is that the code to check for registration (and time limit) is
still embeded somewhere in Megaem 2.0023b, but without the registration
switch to allow for bypassing this embedded code. Jayeson, any comments?

FWIW, my system is an Intel 386dx/33/64c, Cyrix 387, 8MB ram, 1MB GUS,
MS DOS 6.2, Chips 82c206, all other chips by SIS. Cirrus 5426 video set,
WD 2250 IDE hard drive.

Thanks for any help.

Ok, so on with my megaem questions...

1) What games have you all found are REAL nice with the new megaem?
2) Have you found any games that don't work with megaem besides DOS4G games
    (which use protected mode) ack.

and here is the hard one....

3) Who else is afraid that the coming of megaem will make game companys
lessen their want to support the GUS nativly..if megaem works...why should
they support gus in native mode? I'm worried...what do the guys at
   GRAVIS/FORTE say? I'm interested....

ok..now on to something about IRC!

Where are you all! :)
My alias is XELTAR so if you see me around on IRC, go ahead and send a

It took me over 60 attempts to get onto the Gravis BBS in Burnaby BC,
but I finally got on. It sure is busy.

As promised Mega-Em 2.00 B23 has been released on November 15, 1993.

You can get it in the submit directory at archive.epas.utoronto.ca or
in /pub/MSDOS_UPLOADS/gus at wuarchive.wustl.edu (so you guys don't
flood the wimpy Canada <-> US internet link)

Also released today are new Windoze 3.1 drivers with linear volume
option (gus0035.zip), a newer Ultramid (umid105.zip) and a patch for
Privateer, so it'll work with SBOS (ailpatch.zip).

The cable fitted? I tought the Mitsumi cable had british spacings while
the GUS has millimetric spacing. I dont remember how the Mitsumi output
is assigned btw, but on the GUS side, it's RGGL.

>When I ran MPC-Wizzard 2.0, the midi test produced no sound.

MPC means multimedia PC. This is a spec with a minimum hardware configuration
and software support. The hardware specs have two levels (1 and 2) presently,
and in software, only 1. Additions to the software interface will have to be
made in the future, but presently, a software which says MPC compliant must
support:

-Selection of the input and output devices (like the wave devices, the midi
devices etc...)
-patch caching
-bank selection thru the midi patch cache functions
-basic or extended (depending on the midi device) channels on dual sequenced
midi files (there is a flag for that) or full 16 channels
etc...

So, yes, patch caching MUST be supported for a product to state MPC compliance.
This is clearly described in the Microsoft appnotes about MPC support in
applications.

Has anyone experienced the same problem as I did with the new windows' driver?
I could load up the windows without any problem, I could play any wave file as
I want, but the new driver would not let me to load any patches onto my GUS.
I tried to load patches manually, but it won't let me do it. The available
memory of the GUS is 1016kb, I've no idea why the new driver would not load
the patches. I even tried to remove the old drivers from dos and reinstall the
driver twice, but still the driver don't respond to any patch loading.

Now I am using the old driver, hoping anyone of you can help me to solve this
problem.

Thanks in advance!

Subject: New windows drivers

After stuffing around a bit i got the new windows drivers to work, make sure
you copy the new ultrasnd.ini into the c:\ultrasnd directory (or equivalent)
or no patches will load, the installation routine didnt do it automatically
for me.

And also make sure ALL other windows sound drivers except the basic ones are
deleted, even the piano driver if you have it, else no go.

canyon.mid (the midi file that comes with windows) seemed to sound better alrey with the linear volume response on, so well done gravis! the only bother
now is to unvmap all my old midi files.. arrggh

2 questions:

1. To the author of vmap (phat was it?). If we run vmap in reverse mode to get
back to normal linear response, will it be exactly the same as it was before
vmapping, or does vmapping and then unvmapping a midi file change the volumes
a little in the process.

2. WHAT are the functions in the new mixer that wont work on older GUS', what
are these new features of the GUS 3.4 that the old ones dont have?

Considering the Turtle Beach Multisound is in process of discontinuation
(because of the Tahiti and Maui and the fact that the 56K was not a big sales
factor since they never produced any dsp applications or sdk), that the Maui
is not out yet, that the Waveblaster has a worst SNR and smaller sample

Subject: those difficult shots in Epic Pinball

Hello,

This topic isn't really GUS-related anymore, but originally, it was; we were
talking about sound in the game. But then I mentioned about how I can't
intentionally make the left lane shot, and the right sink hole shot in the
game, and asked if anyone knew how to intentionally make these shots. Based
on the flurry of responses I received, it seems like nobody can make these
shots, and each person asked me to tell them if I found out from somebody,
how to intentionally make these important shots. So instead of individually
mailing everyone, I decided to post my findings here (since everybody who
asked the question, saw my original question here first).
Well, the bad news is that nobody knows how to make these shots
intentionally, so I've come to the conclusion that these shots don't require
any skill what-so-ever, and are pretty much left to chance. Oh
well...perhaps if one of the Epic guys reads this, maybe they might take it
as a constructive criticism to not make the crucial (Jackpot and activation)
shots, subject to chance, in their future tables. Or if they have a
suggestion... :)

Seems it's the SB DAC emulation as I tried it with MT-32 or SC and SB, and
with only sb emulation for Xwing, Master of Orion and Task Force. All 3
eventually crashed, SIGH. Posted a msg to the rep on Genie, and HOPE I'm
doing something wrong (yeh, like still being stuck at 256k! No flames,
please!). StarHawk posted me and said he got MOO working (1mb GUS), but I
don't know how far into it he went. He also reported tentative Xwing
problems. Meanwhile, I'm feeling some serious Mega blues...Maybe when this

on the head and do the simple fix I overlooked.

I just tried out the GUS Windows drivers from GUS0035.ZIP (version 1.2).
The infamous "Device Capabilities" defect (which others have doubted the
existance of) has been fixed - the driver now reports Stereo by both means
for both input and output. Pocket Recorder now allows stereo recording,
which previously it did not.

I have not noticed any differences with Microsoft Arcade (but I have not
yet tried restoring the defaults).

As for MegaEm, Microprose World Circuit is not helped at all by the new
version.
