Ralam,
No I put Setgus, because the SBOS load and Unload would not work for
me. It refused to do anything, also line in played but very low. Even with
the SBPro's sound all the way up. So I hooked my SBPro to my stereo and
my GUS to it's own speakers and ran Diagnostic's in SETGUS and it worked
fine. I have since removed my SBPRO and am using SBOS and Megaem now.

                           ***StarHawk***
P.S. I also am having X-wing music quit, but it comes back if I go to menu
and return to simulation. But, the game locks up within a minute after this.
 Jayson,
Does the SB DAC in Mega-em have trouble playing "Many" Digital sounds
at once? This seems to be when the crash occurs. Thanks!

For Sierra games that can't "initialize" your soundcard, turn off turbo
when the game loads. The detection routines aren't timed properly for fast
machines, it would appear. You can turn turbo back on once the first
note is heard.

Have you tried changing the address jumpers on the card to the
other available choices (210, 230, 240, 250, etc.)? Have you made sure
that your GUS is seated securely in its slot? A "no card detected"
problem tends to indicate an address conflict or poor mechanical fit.

Oops, I guess I should have read this far before offering you suggestions
you've already tried. How about checking your I/O bus speed? Is it 8MHz?

You can't have more than one game port enabled on your I/O bus, but
you can hook up two joysticks to one port via a joystick Y-splitter.

Try SB IRQ 5 instead of IRQ 7 if that's what you're using. PoP2 works
perfectly with Mega-Em and IRQ 5 for me.

Copy the new ultrasnd.ini from gus0035 to your /ultrasnd directory (not
/ultrasnd/windows), and edit the patchdir= field in the file to reflect
your own setup.

Well I finally got IndyCar Racing, and I have gotten it to work with the
GUS (well, actually I saw a posting in c.s.i.p.s that had the correct
answer). The trick is to use sbos -o3 and set the game up for a Sound
Blaster. The noises are not all that realistic, but it beats playing
in silence. I expect to try the game out on a system with a Sound Blaster
for comparison. Enjoy.

Subject: Legacy Problems

OK, In my last message, I talked about my problems with MegaEm and "Legacy".
I now have some additional info about the problems. Seems like if I pick
LAPC-1 option the music works fine. If I pick the MT-32 option in the install,
It plays music during the intro and then stops and disables the music option
for the rest of the game. If I pick the Roland/SB option, It plays music
during the intro, but no digital effects and after that, it locks up.
If I pick SB, It plays all the digital effects fine, but no music. (Of course
thats simply because MegaEm doesn't support FM output yet). The only thing
I can think is going wrong is that when you pick the Roland/SB, it uses
the MT-32 and since that screws up alone, it messes up the SB along with
it? I would appreciate ANY suggestions or comments, esp. from Gravis or
the author of Megaem.

Fellow GUSers,

Well I have some praise for Gravis :-). The new Mega-em is a
great idea and shows that the people at Gravis are really thinking. Good
job Gravis, innovation will take you to the top.

To those of you who are experiencing problems with delays with
X-wing. The README file mentions that it may be a DMA conflict with your
HD. Check it out and see if that is it.

I went to Egghead the other day and they had Rebel Assault on
display. Tres Cool, though they did not have it set up with a GUS too bad.
Whilst I was there I purchased the new Xwing mission pack B-Wing. It is a
pretty neat ship. I hope that the new TIE Fighter game has GUS support, I
love the Empire. I think it has to do with their theme song.

	Well happy GUSing.

			Sincerely,

Subject: Mega-Em Comments and Windows Driver Question

Have installed the new Mega-Em and Windows drivers on my system without a
single problem. Railroad Tycoon Deluxe sounds awesome.

Some older games however, such as Sierra's Jones in the Fast Lane and Sega's
Joe Montana Football sound very weak in MT 32 emulation. No problem with
Mega-Em however.

Two questions on windows drivers:

    LINEAR VOLUME
What does the linear volume option in the windows driver setup
        dialog box actually do?

    MIXER MIDI VOLUME
In the new mixer's volume controls there are two slides to control
MIDI volume. Does the right slide control line out volume? Gravis
should label these slides before final release of the new drivers.

GUS day everyone,

Amazing how games that didn't want to work with SBOS now works
with the new MegaEM. I was just about to return Jurassic Park because it
wouldn't work. But I decided to give it a try with MegaEM 2B0003 and I
was impressed. It works and beautifully.

Anyone care to explain what is that SSI SBOS 3.6 found on epas?
Is it a normal SBOS we can use or one specially made for Flashback?

Subject: MegaEm, X-Wing, MemMgr

I've found a sure-fire way to get X-wing to work and not lose the music
during the missions. X-wing seems to be really sensitive to how expanded
memory is used. I get excellent results, no dropouts, if I boot up with
NO expanded memory using TSRs or drivers. That means no /EMS switch for
Stacker, allow 4DOS to swap only to XMS, and no Stealth for QEMM. I never
get a dropout now.

FWIW, the music dropout also occurs with DOS 6 EMM386 if I have any other
EMS-using programs resident in memory. In my opinion, this is a flaw in
X-Wing.

To find out if you have any EMS-using TSRs, you can use QEMM's ems.com
program. Just type 'ems dir' and look at the list it prints. If there
are any handles with a name other than "HMA" or "EMB1" EMB2" etc., then
you have a program that has taken out an EMS handle (EMB refers to XMS
memory blocks). The only EMS handle you should have is the 16K handle
MegaEm takes out.

Having X-Wing loaded on a Stacker drive doesn't appear to have any effect,
as I get the same results if I move it to my uncompressed drive.

Subject: Megaem, X-wing, QEMM *solved*

I had a hunch about QEMM and X-wing, and played around yesterday until
I managed to track down the problem. This addresses the issue of the
music-stoppage and/or lockups during X-wing play with MegaEm and
X-wing.

The solution is simple: don't let QEMM do its "stealth ROM" thing. If
you reconfigure QEMM, shutting off the Stealth ROM feature, the
problems vanish. Unfortunately, the Stealth ROM is one of the more
desirable features of QEMM 7.01...But let's face it; X-wing is more
important. :)

I have cc'd this note to Jayeson so he can look into the causes...

I think it is still on epas somewhere, but those of you who are trying to
go this route may want to look for the file SBGUSFAQ.zip on epas. It is
the little fixes for quirks that arise when trying to get the two to
work together. There are a few little problems that haven't been updated
with the file, but it covers DOS and Windows stuff pretty well, I think.

BTW, my SBPro and GUS have worked harmoniously together since November
of last year (hey, it's been a year!).

Wow! Thats all I have to say...

Whoever made this patch deserves a big round of applause!

Its a patch for Wolf3D (v1.0 or the full-blown game) for the GUS, it uses
RAW sound files for effects, and plays MODs as music. Compared to my
SoundBlaster Sound with it, UltraWolf puts it to shame.

I heard someone was working on Barney Effects for it? Hehe...
If anyone has any better samples they made Email me, I am working on some
of my own samples for it as well.

Later!

< When I play Xwing with the new megaem, the game seems to skip or
< slow down when when selecting a target. I have a solution to the
< problem. On my hard drive I have three versions of EMM386.exe.
< One came with dos 6.2, one came with dos6, and the third one I
< THINK came with windows 3.1 (it is in my 3.1 directory). If I
< use the EMM386 from the windows directory, the game has no problems.
< However, this version of EMM386 only gives around 30k of high memory
< for drivers. Therefore, doublespace loads low leaving me with only room
< for a mouse driver.

Try these lines in your config.sys file:
     DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
     DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE 2048 RAM I=E000-EFFF
     DOS=HIGH,UMB
After those lines are in place, you should have no problems loading all
of your TSR's high. The bit about "2048 RAM" will give your 2k of EMS,
and the "I=E000-EFFF" will convert about 159k of memory as upper memory
blocks. Then you can load things high to your hearts content. Enjoy!
