ARJ is a compress/uncompress program. It is available on several ftp-sites. One example is: dorm.rutgers.edu in the drawer /pub/DOS_Uncompress. The file is named arj.exe.

It all depends on what surround system you have. I have an early model
surround sound system (circa 1989), and it basically something that
enhances the depth of the stereo sound to make it sound like you are
immersed by the sound. However, if you have a system that uses the Dolby
Pro Logic surround sound, you can actually direct sounds to specific
speaker(s). I think it is Front/Left, Front/Right, Rear/Left, Rear/Right,
Front/Center, Surround (Front & Rear), and all the various combinations of
these. Ususally the Pro Logic code is embedded within the audio source
being played back. My friend has a Pro Logic decoder in his amplifier, and
when we play back some Pro Logic encoded Laser Dics, you get the full
surround effect.

Try out Second Reality on your stereo. It has some surround sound at the
the very start (albeit, not very much)....I don't think they used Pro
Logic encoding though...

My Rebel Assault box lists "Ultrasound" as the last card in it's list
supported cards, and it IS in the menu. My GUS is in for repairs, so I've
only played the game with an SB 1.05 and I think I'm missing something :)

Seeing how many people are on the net I just wondered:
Would it legally be possible for Gravis to receive orders for hardware
through the net ? People could send their address and VISA number to
an e-mail address. It's both cheaper than using the phone + the chance
of getting your address mistyped is reduced. Verification of the order
would also be simple as the sales team could easily reply to the mail.

Just an idea. Is it viable at all ? The could have like a list of current
products, including what extra p&p it would be to ship overseas.

Morning.

Since I haven't seen it here this week I thought I'd post. I tryed out the
new Megaem with Frontier. The intro is lovely. But the problem is, even
with -SS set to stop long sustains, during the game there is a continuous
droning or whining from the speakers. I had to go back to my SB.

Has anyone else got this to work? I will admit, I didn't try very hard to get
it working. No time.

Bye.

To get both SCC1 midi with SB digital in Dune 2 you need to use a hex editor to
change the file dune.cfg to - B6 A8 A9 A0 A1 A6 A4 00 B8 - this sounds great
although I do get the occasional random midi sound played.

Does anyone know if we wilget 32 bit .dll AIL drivers for the GUS?

It works fine on my system. The funny thing is, it didn't recognize the
emulation in the install program, but did let me select General Midi/
Sound Canvas anyway. You should be aware of the time it takes for the
game to 'start' after you've pressed return. It shows a black screen for
a while, then something like "loading..." at the top of the screen for
yet some time before the actual intro is starting.

I'm not sure how much memory it really wants though. I use QEMM v6.x
in stealth mode (no, haven't upgraded yet.. this version has yet to
fail me), DOS 6.0 (never did trust those upgrades) w/doublespace
on a 386DX-33 w/4MB, GUS w/1MB, ET-4000 w/1MB, SCSI controller,
IDE controller (no idea what the SCSI address is, but it works, so
why worry? :)).

But lets not get out of hand here.. here's the important stuff in my
autoexec.bat and config.sys files:
 ---------------------------------
AUTOEXEC:

C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE 512
 ..
SET ULTRADIR=E:\ULTRASND
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T1
SET ULTRASND=220,7,7,11,7
 ..

CONFIG:

DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS R:3 RAM ON X=B000-B7FF DMA=96 ST:M
DEVICE=C:\QEMM\LOADHI.SYS /R:1 E:\ULTRASND\ULTRINIT.SYS ULTRASND=220,7,7,11,7

 ------------------------------
And MOO works like a charm. I think I have about 612k base mem free after
everything is loaded (TSR's, mouse, mega-em etc.).

---> for that list of games that work great with MEGAEM - Include MOO !
---> The sound and effects are great! GM/Sound Canvas + SB.

Good work Gravis!

 Hi Susan and all GUSland.

I'm posting this for (1) general interest and (2) because email
 to your address bounced.
Yes the PAS cable will work fine with your GUS, according to
Matthew Arabeid (former Gravis tech) with no modification needed.
I might sugggest the "Sound Galaxy" midi cable; it has
midi-in/out and joystick port. In my experience, it works excellent
and is a LOT cheaper than the other cables and boxes (~$19.95 CDN,
versus ~$35 for the PAS cable, ~$50 for the Gravis box)

 Hope that helps!

Susan White asked whether the PAS Midimate works on the GUS.

I've got it and it's working fine, but for some reason MIDI clocks aren't
getting to the PC through this port. I think the problem probably lies in
the GUS Windows driver, but haven't bothered to investigate it further. This
problem is in the old driver; again, I haven't tested the new drivers yet.

It WORKED!!

After most of a year badgering a computer store my friend works at,
they are now Wise GUS Suppliers!!! In The Store, On The Shelf!! This is a
popular and successful store (and we know why!), locally-owned, in a
population of about 250,000, with another branch store 45 miles away serving
about 50,000 (S.C., USA). 'Course there were probably more and more

They also have a GUS packaged in an "Ultra Action Pak" which
included:
        - Ultrasound card (don't know memory)
        - Gravis PC Gamepad
        - Accolade Test Drive III
        - Accolade Winter Challenge
        Retail $180.

I've never heard of this package. Wonder if those Accolade games
have GUS support?! (hm, maybe they were mentioned in Gravis' "Just to let
you know" list of titles...) Anyway, I tried to peek inside, but couldn't
tell much, everything was all wrapped up, and we were in a hurry. I'm
getting them up to speed with some back GUS Digests, Megaem23b, drivers, and
the State of GUS in general, all of which the manager is eating up!

Subject: NMI problem

Hi all. I just upgraded to a 486/DX33 and now my GUS does not work properly.
I have the following problems:
1) Failure in the automatic setup (SBOS). If I try to load SBOS I get the messa
ge "The NMI procedue is disable din this PC". I know this has been reported
previously and I do recall seeing long postings about it. Now I need some
technical info on why this is happening (so I can convince the people I bought
the PC from to change the motherboard). I did not find anything in the FAQ (it
could be useful to insert there some info). I E-mailed Gravis tech support but
NO answer [shame on them!]. The only guy that ALWAYS answers promptly is John
Smith (space for public praise), but I don't want to bother him with my problms.
2) I went ahead with the installation but when I play a midi file from Playmidi
or Mediaplayer the sound comes out only from one speaker and it is filled with
cracks and pops and hisses. Gustest finds my card at the right address (220h)
and the DRAM is all OK. The card is installed on the default settings, BTW.
To my (poor) understanding this is a problem not related to the NMI procedure,
but it is a separate problem. Please correct/confort/HELP!
Of course the GUS previously was working PERFECTLY (384/DX33).

Since my initial post about the extender crash with Rebel Assault, I was
contacted both via phone and e-mail by Lucas Arts tech support. They were
very helpful and professional, but were unable to offer any other
solutions than the one I tried (use DOS4GW from Shadow Caster) or just
return the game before Egghead's return policy deadline ran out, and try
again later. They expect a fix to be available in a few weeks, and Lucas
is working with Rational Systems right now to resolve the problems with
the DOS extender on some PCs (Lucas Arts has several PCs that crash like
mine does, so they knew exactly what I was experiencing).

So although I must give the game itself a grade of 'F', Lucas Arts tech
support gets an 'A' for their quick, professional, and honest response to
my trouble report. I *will* try the game again when the fix is
available.

Oh well. At least now I know it's not just me who never gets a response out of

I've never once had the courtesy of a reply. Maybe it has something to do with

This morning I installed Sam & Max on my computer and now I'm having
some major sound problems. I originally configured the game to work with the
new Megaem Beta (Sound Blaster and General Midi). Things worked ok in the
sound configre program. It has a little test to see if the sound is working
correctly. I configured it with the default SBlaster setup (IRQ 7, etc) and
I configured the music to use Genrral Midi with the standar setup ( 330h, no
IRQ, etc.) The Midi sample tested out perfectly but when it came time to
test the SB, the sound was quite broken up. After I was done configuring the
sound and loading Megaem I started the game. The music worked great but
there were no sound effects at all! What could be wrong? As a last resort I
then tried SBOS10B and SBOS2.4 with no luck! There was still no digital sound
and the dame froze up! What can I do? Have I overlooked something?

BTW, I'm running it on a 386DX\33 with a 256 GUS and I'm using Qemm 7.01.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

To experience surround sound, you 'll need to have an application that
can output surround sound. There are two that I know of: Second Reality
demo by FC, and Epic pinball/silverball by Epic. You can get both from
ftp.uwp.edu. Also DMP is supposed to provide pseudo surround sound
as well, though I think it's simulated and not coded in Dolby Pro Logic.

Subject: Ultrawlf question

In editing the .INF files of UltraWolf to set up your own mods, what do
all the funky little characters at the right mean? Like:

; - 23|27 33|37

I read the docs and it didn't explicitly say anything about it one way or
the other except to mention something like ; - Level 1.1 or some such
which does not appear in the actual .INF file

I realize that this is just a comment and is not important for the
functioning of the thing, but I'm trying to add some of my own mods to the
mix without replacing the existing ones wholesale. I've mapped out a
couple of levels so far, but it's a real pain in the ass and I was
wondering if anyone out there in netland (or in digestland as the case may
be) had already figured out the mapping for the thing to determine which
mod goes with which level. There seems to be many more lines in the file
than levels in the game as well...

Thanks...
