IBM CORPORATION 9/29/87 NSC TIME OF DAY PROBLEM PS/2 M50/60, ERROR CODE 162/163 DOS 3.30 BACKUP.COM REPLACEMENT. Recently, our customer surveys and ongoing quality testing have revealed a problem on some IBM Personal System/2 Model 50 and 60 equipment. This problem has resulted in unnecessary planar replacements. The problem is usually due to an inaccurate BIOS reset of the time of day clock, and is not due to planar failure, as the diagnostics suggest. On the model 50, the clock might have an inaccurate date and/or time after power on. On the model 60, the power on self test may display "ERROR CODE 162/163". Either condition is caused by an inaccurate reset of the clock by BIOS after certain operations. A System Software update has been developed that eliminates this problem. This update is available at all Authorized Service locations in a Service Update to be mailed the week of October 5, 1987. The update is also available in a file on the bulletin board called DOS33FIX.ARC. (In addition to the above mentioned update, DOS33FIX.ARC contains an updated version of DOS 3.30 BACKUP.COM that resolves a multiple subdirectory backup problem.) In the interim, users can circumvent the problem by entering the current date using the DOS DATE command immediately before turning the system off. Installation of the System Software update will eliminate the problem as well as the need for this extra step.
