Industry Leaders Urge Rapid Introduction of CCITT Standard

ATLANTA, GA, 2 February 1993 -- More than 60 modem makers,
representing more than 75 percent of worldwide production, today announced
their formal support of the CCITT V.Fast standard technology. The group
includes industry leaders such as Amber Logic, AMT International Industries,
Inc., Anchor Datacomm BV, Applied Engineering, Askey Computer Corp., Atrie
Technology Inc., Banksia Info. Tech., Best Data Products, Inc., Cardinal
Technologies Inc., Communicate, CompuSpec Industries Ltd., Computer Peripherals
Inc., CPV, Cray Communications Ltd., Datatronics Technology Inc., Delta
Electronics, Inc., Digicom S.P.A., Digitan Systems, Inc., Digitech, Eisa, Dove
Computer Corp., General DataComm, Inc., GVC Corp., Halcyon Communications,
Hayes Microcomputer Products, Inc., Insys, Intel, Interlink, Internetworks
Electronics, Inventa Electronics Co. Ltd., Kortex, Lasat, Lightspeed, Maestro
Pty. Ltd., Megahertz Corp., Microcom, Inc., Motorola Codex, NCS New
Communication Systems, Netcomm, Nuvo Corp. of America, Pace Micro Technology,
Pacific Research Pty. Ltd., Paxdata, Perfect Data Corp., PNB, S.A., Practical
Peripherals, PSI Integration, Psion Dacom, Racal-Datacom, Rockwell
International Corp., SAT, Supra Corp., Telenetics, Telindus, Tricom Group,
Twincom Division of Target Technologies, Inc., UDS Motorola, Vidar-SMS Co.,
Ltd. and Well Communication Corp. and supports the CCITT study group for modem
standards, which has already reviewed and rejected the proposal for an interim
standard called "V.32terbo."

These members of the modem industry agree on superiority of the V.Fast
family of technologies, and are unified in their position that the recently
proposed "V.32terbo" solution stretches the capabilities of V.32 technology
beyond its design limits. Since the technical detail of the V.Fast standard is
expected to be finalized by the end of 1993, the group of companies has chosen
to maintain support for the CCITT process which will provide users with the
next generation of transmission technology. The V.Fast standard uses adaptive
line probing techniques and symbol rates which optimize the configuration of
the modem to achieve the maximum throughput that the telephone networks can
support. These advanced techniques will allow for reliable transmission at
data rates up to 28.8 kbit/s, a 100 percent increase over the current V.32 bis
CCITT standard of 14.4 kbit/s.

In contrast to the "V.32terbo" scheme, which does not adapt its
<S>top
bandwidth to channel impairments, V.Fast technology ensures worldwide
connectivity, adapts to and enhances performance over most telephone channels.
This advanced technology allows full utilization of the channel bandwidth,
delivering the highest possible data rate, thereby optimizing throughput and
minimizing line charges. V.Fast technology utilizes the wider bandwidth
available on today's telephone networks, making it significantly more immune to
noise and other telephone line impairments. This will result in up to a 50
percent improvement in throughput over "V.32terbo."

Best known as the leader in microcomputer modems, Hayes develops,
supplies and supports computer communications equipment and software for
personal computer and computer communications networks. The company
distributes its products in over 60 countries through a global network of
authorized distributors, dealers, mass merchants, VARs, systems integrators and
original equipment manufacturers.
