Sqed/32 for the OS/2 Presentation Manager, Version 1.0
      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

               Introduction

Sqed/32 is a Fidonet compatible message editor for
                   IBM OS/2 2.1.

This program is still a beta. Version 1.0, however,
                   is expected very soon.

This documentation is in beta, too. As Jrg-Stefan is
creating new features very fast, it is very hard to
keep this documentation up to date. I compiled this
English version during the last two weeks and was not
able to spend enough time on the translation. Please
excuse all mistakes and flaws. I will keep working on
it and should have a better version ready by mid
                   January 1994.
                                        [Jan-Peter Koopmann]

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

               Installing Sqed/32

Since you are reading this section of the documentation
you either are one of the persons who really read the
documentation before trying to install the program, or
you experienced difficulties installing Sqed/32. (By the
way, the first case appears to be quit improbable)

This program is really easy to install. Just follow these
               steps:

               1) Create a directory just for Sqed/32 (not really
                  necessary but recommended !).

               2) Now unarchive the Sqed/32 package into this directory.
However, since you are reading this manual you
obviously already unarchived the file. Therefore move
all Sqed/32 files to this directory.

               3) Sqed/32 requires a file called SQED.DLL where all
language definitions for windows, dialogs and menus
are defined. The package should contain at least two
                  language files, DEUTSCH.DLL and ENGLISH.DLL . Simply
rename the desired language file to SQED.DLL. Remove
the other language files if you want, you do not need
                  them anymore.

               4) Start Sqed/32. The first time you start Sqed/32 it
will open the Settings notebook and ask for your name,
node adress and path to your squish.cfg. Please
continue with section "Configurating Sqed/32" on page
15 for more details on the Settings notebook. You need
a correct SQUISH.CFG since Sqed/32 will get a lot of
information out of this file. Sqed/32 will not work
                  without it !

Sqed/32 should now be ready for work ! Have fun !

Sqed/32 keeps data in its own INI files which are located
in the Sqed/32 directory as well as in the OS2.INI file.

If you install a new version of Sqed/32 or if you
reinstall your current version it might be necessary to
delete the "Sqed/32" application from the OS2.INI as well
as all INI files in the Sqed/32 directory.

To edit the OS2.INI file, usw INIMAINT.EXE (c) Garry
Associates. INIMT21F.ZIP is the most recent version of
               this OS/2 Utility.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

               Configurating Sqed/32

Unlike most other editors for Fido-Net mailing systems,
Sqed/32 is not configurated by cryptic textfiles. Sqed/32
is a PM-Application and therefore all necessary
information is managed in a PM-style notebook dialog.
This dialog truly is the heart of Sqed/32. Areas, paths,
adresses etc. are defined here, but also miscellaneous
information about windows, dialogs, fonts and colours.

Starting Sqed/32 for the first time, you will have to
provide the editor with some necessary information before
you can start working. Some basic entries are the
complete path to your SQUISH.CFG and at least one name
and adress. All entries are stored in OS/2 style INI-
files that can be edited with all common INI-tools.

Most of the notebook-fields are not case sensitive. That
means 'f:\point\squish\squish.cfg' will be treated the
same way as 'F:\POINT\SQUISH\SQUISH.CFG'. Tokens are the
big exception. All Tokens have to be upper case.
Moreover, names are, of course, case sensitive.

Paths and file names can be entered two different ways.
Either you type in the desired path or file name directly
or you enter a file dialog by pressing the corresponding
push button. The file dialog, however, will make your
               life a lot easier

The following section describes all notebook-pages of
Sqed/32. Common OS/2 limitations (e.g. length) apply for
               all entries in the notebook.

                 Squish.Cfg

                  Description:

Here you have to enter the complete path to the
Squish configuration file SQUISH.CFG. Sqed/32 will
gain information such as names, origins, adresses and
                   areas from this file.

                   This entry is mandatory.

                  Syntax:

                   [<PATH><FILENAME>]

                  Examples:

                 Ignore duplicate areas

                  Description:

Some programs unfortunately tend to define areas
twice. By enableing this option, duplicate area
                   definitions are ignored.

                 Scan areas on startup

                  Description:

If you want Sqed/32 to scan all areas on startup,
enable this options. By scanning an area, Sqed/32
determines the number of messages and the last read
message in that area. Scanning is done in the
background. The corresponding thread's priority is
                   REGULAR, -5.

Default: Areas are scanned only at manual request.

                 Drive mapping

                  Description:

This function gives you the capability of
emulating/renaming specific drive letters in a
                   network environment.
Running a Mailbox on an IBM LAN SERVER/Microsoft LAN
Manager is no longer an exception.

If you access files on the server you might have to
create two configuration files due to different drive
letters. This is because drive letters on the server
and on the workstation may differ due to your drive
                   mapping.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------
                         Page 17 - Configurating Sqed/32

Sqed/32 for the OS/2 Presentation Manager, Version 1.0
      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's assume the Squish files for the area OS2 are on
the server drive E:. Therefore your SQUISH.CFG on the
server would read something like this:

                   EchoArea OS2.GER E:\ECHOMAIL\097 2:242/400 -$

On your workstation you mapped this drive to be drive
H: In order to access the area OS2 you then would
have to create yet another configuration file with
                   the following line:

                   EchoArea OS2.GER H:\ECHOMAIL\097 -$

However, if you use the drive remapping facility of
Sqed/32, you can tell Sqed/32 to interpret drive E:
as drive H: and therefore you can use your
configuration file on the server on the workstation
                   as well.

With the above example you would define the
                   following:

                   H: -> E:

To do this, click on the 'Add' button. Sqed/32 now
prompts you to enter the two drive letters (in this
                   example H and E).

Drive mapping also works with file attaches. If
Sqed/32 discovers a path that would be different on
the server, the path is adjusted.

                  Syntax:

                   [<From> <To>]

                  Examples:

                   H: -> E:
                   L: -> C:

                  Limitations:

                 Names

                  Description:

Here you define names. Sqed/32 uses these names to
detect messages for you. Names are case sensitive.

On this notebook page you will find information about
all areas defined in SQUISH.CFG. The list-box
displays the areas in the same order they are defined
in SQUISH.CFG. Moreover you will obtain more data
about the kind and type of the currently marked area.
Refer to your mail-processor documentation for a more
detailed explanation of the two groups 'INFORMATION'
                   and 'TYPE'.

                 .SQL offset

                  Description:

This Keyword defines the offset Sqed/32 will use to
store the lastread-pointer in squish areas. Lastread-
pointer in Squish areas are kept in the
<path><name>.SQL files, whereas <path><name> is the
area definition in your SQUISH.CFG (NetArea, BadArea,
                   DupeArea, EchoArea).

                Colours

These three choices allow you to define different

This selection defines the priorities of the
automatically generated filerequest messegas. Look on
page 43 for details on the filerequest dialog.

                 Direct

                  Description:

Determines whether or not automatically generated
file-request mails (more details on page 43) have the
                   direct-flag enabled.
If the direct-flag is enabled, the message is sent to
the destination adress without routing. Your mailer
determines at what time this message is sent. Refer
to the Squish documentation for more details.

                  Description:

This message attribute is very similar. Again, your
request messages are sent to the destination adress
without routing. This attribute, however, tell your
mailer to sent these messages as soon as possible.
Again, have a look at the Squish documentation if you
are curious and want some more information.

                Macro

                 CTRL+1 bis CTRL+0

                  Description:

You can define up to 10 macros which are inserted in
your message by pressing CTRL-<number>. Just click
your mouse within the listbox and enter the desired
                   text.
Macros may expand over several lines. Empty spaces
and lines are inserted as they appear in the listbox.
Therefore, if a macro ends with an empty line, this
will also be inserted in the message.

                  Syntax:

                CarbonCopy

A Carbon Copy (CC) is an exact copy of a NetMail
which is sent to one ore more persons in addition to
                   the original recipient.

Sqed/32 uses a group oriented structure. You group
all recipients you want to adress into a Carbon Copy

group. Choose your group members wisely since this
technique is only helpful if your groups do not
                   change too much.

In order to create a CC Netmail simply enter the name
of the desired CC group into the 'To:' field. When
you save this message, Sqed/32 creates an original
copy of the message with the SENT flag already set.
Moreover one copy is created for each group member
with the KILL flag set. Your mail processor will send
the message to all recipients. After the messages
have been sent, only the original copy remains in
                   your messagebase.

                 Group

                  Description:

By pressing the 'New' you activate another window.
Enter the name of the new CC-Group here. This new
group will then be inserted at the end of the combo-
                   box.
The 'delete' button deletes a group with all its
                   members (surprise !).

                  Syntax:

               [<Groupname>]

                  Examples:

                 Mitglieder

                  Description:

This lisbox contains all members (and adresses) of
                   the selected CC-group.
In case you just created a new CC-group, the 'Add'-
Button is enabled. By choosing this button, the
nodelist-dialog (page 45) appears. This dialog helps
you finding the adresses of the desired members. New
members are inserted in the 'members' listbox.

If you want to add a member to an existing group,
first select on of the members and then choose 'Add'.

                Paths

Here you specify some paths crucial to Sqed/32.

                 Echotoss.Log

                  Description:

When writing a new message in an echoarea Sqed/32
adds the areatag to the file ECHOTOSS.LOG.
By telling Squish about this file (using the -
f<echotoss.log> parameter) you might speed up your
echo-processing dramatically, since Squish no longer
searches all echoareas but only the areas with new
                   messages.

                  Description:

Word wrapping starts in this column. This only
                   affects quoting messages.

                   Possible values: 10 to 75

                 Insert initials

                  Description:

Again, this only effects quoting messages. If
enabled, all quoted lines will begin with the
initials of the quoted author. Otherwise, quoting
behaves just like in CIS, meaning all quoted lines
                   start with '>'.

                Token

Sqed/32 tries to make life as easy as possible for
you. Therefore Sqed/32 gives you the capability of
using templates in order to do some typing for you.
Sqed/32 can enter text automatically at the following
                   positions:

                   - at the beginning of new messages
                   - at the beginning of replies in other areas
                   - at the beginning of replies in the same area
                   - at the beginning of forwarded messages
                   - at the end of forwarded messages
                   - at the end of all other messages

To make templates more flexible Sqed/32 offers
variables, so called tokens. Tokens are replaced with
the corresponding values at the time of the message
creation. The [DATE] token, e.g., is replaced with
the date and time of the message, which you are
                   replying to.

If you want to define text to one of the sections
mentioned above, simply select this section in the
combobox and enter the textbox using your mouse. Now
enter the desired Text. If you want to insert a token
into the text, select a generic term from the lower
listbox and choose from the corresponding tokens. The
selected token is then entered at the current cursor
                   position in the upper textbox.

Here you can define aliases. Aliases are
abbreviations. Each alias stands for a recipient and
maybe even his adress and a subject. When you enter
an alias in the recipient field and press the
[tabulator] key, the corresponding name, adress and
                   subject are filled in automatically.
This makes life a lot easier if you happen to write a
                   lot to some people.

                 Syntax:

                   ALIAS <Aliasname>;<Recipient>;[Recipient's
                   adress];[Subject]

               Miscellaneous informationen

                Errorlevel

When exiting Sqed/32 one or more of the following
                   errorlevel may be returned :

1: New NetMail has been entered
2: New EchoMail has been entered
4: New LocalMail has been entered

Of course combinations of these errorlevels are
possible also. For example, an errorlevel of 3 means
that both, new NetMail and new EchoMail have been
                   entered.

                Origins

                 Description:

Origins are attached to the end of messages in echo
areas (for netmail areas look at page 31). Your
origin should give a small description of your
mailbox. A more or less silly sentence or joke
appears to be the real standard, though.

Sqed/32 uses the origin defined in SQUISH.CFG as the
                   default origin.

However, you can define specific origins for each
                   echo area if you like.

In order to specify an origin line for a squish-area,
simply add a file <areatag>.SQO and put the origin at
the first line of this file.

                   Example:
Let's assume your SQUISH.CFG contains the following
                   definition:
                     EchoArea OS2 F:\POINT\MESSAGES\OS2\OS2INTL -$
                   2:2405/111

Now create the file OS2INTL.SQO in the directory
F:\POINT\MESSAGES\OS2 and enter the desired origin
                   line.

In case you use SEADOG-Echos, Sqed/32 looks for a
file called ORIGIN. The rest is similar to Squish-
                   areas.

                 Syntax:

               Dialogs

                Find

You can invoke the find-dialog by pressing [CTRL+F]
within the main window. With the find-dialog you can
easily find messages by specifying one or more search
                   criteria.

In the left upper part of the dialog you will find
four checkboxes. You can select all checkboxes at the
same time. These checkboxes tell Sqed/32 where to
                   search:

                   - 'From'    -> From field
                   - 'To'      -> To field
                   - 'Subject' -> Subject field
                   - 'Text'    -> Message text

By pressing the 'Add' button the currently selected
search pattern is added to the search criteria window
in the lower left part of the dialog. A search
pattern always consists of two elements: Where to
search and what to search for. The four checkboxes
tell Sqed/32 where to search. The 'Contents' field
tells Sqed/32 what to search for.

If you define more than one search pattern, these
patterns are combined with an OR operation. Therefore
all messages that satisfy at least one of the
                   conditions are found.

                   Search is not case sensitive.

You control the search process with the Video Wlayer
on the lower left edge of the dialog. The leftmost
button starts searching backwards, the middle button
stops searching and the rightmost button starts
                   searching forwards.

Messages that satisfy at least one of the search
patterns are displayed in the 'search results'
listbox at the right side. You can go to one of these
messages by simply clicking on it even if the search
process is not finished yet, as the search process is
a background operation with its own thread.

You end the query by pressing the 'End query' button.

                Replylist

This dialog appears only when reading through
messages using the keyboard or the Video Wlayer.
Moreover the Replylist-Option (page 21) has to be
enabled. If a message has more than one reply and you

press [CTRL-RIGHT] or the corresponding Video Wlayer
button, the replylist dialog pops up and shows you
all replies to the current message. Now choose which
                   reply you want to read.

                Export file

You can activate this dialog using the main menu
(Edit Export) or the context menu in the messaglist
window. Simply enter path and filename and the
currently marked messages are exported to this file
                   in ASCII-Format.

                Filerequest dialog

This dialog is activated by pressing CTRL-G within
the main window. This dialog actually is a file
request assistant and makes file requesting nice and
                   easy.
The first half of the dialog provides information
about the system that you are requesting the files
from. This data is retrieved from the current message
and the nodelist. You cannot alter these fields.
The combo box in the middle helps you choosing the
area, where the request message is places. Usualle
                   this is your netmail area.
All filenames Sqed/32 could discover in the message
text are listed in the listbox at the bottom of the
dialog. Simply select one or more files and click on
the 'Request'-Button to automatically generate a
request-message that can be processed by your mail
processor (e.g. Squish). This message has the KILL-
flag set. The priority of this message is set
according to the default values in the options
                   notebook (see page 27).
The 'Cancel'-button aborts the current operation and
therefore no request message will be generated.

                Kludges

This dialog is available only in bad areas and dupe
areas. You will only see it if you enabled the
corresponding checkboxes in the options notebook (see
page 22). All kludges of the current message are
displayed in this dialog. This might help you
discover the reasons for dupes or bad messages.

                Messagelist

This window contains all unread messages of the
current area. This is the fastest way to get an
                   overview about messages and replies.

For each message its subject line and sender are
displayed. After the sender, all replies to this
message are shown, represented by their senders.
WARNING: Each message is only displayed once in the
message list. If a message is already displayed in
the reply list of another message, it will not appear
again. Replies are indented a bit. Actually you may
find the resulting structure similar to a message-
tree. Since describing this technique is quite
                   difficult, how about an example:

                   -----------------------
                   Very stupid subject!
                     Jan-Peter Koopmann
                        Jrg-Stefan Sell
                           Volker Weber
                        Bill Clinton
                   Next stupid subject!
                     Volker Weber
                   -----------------------

                   Explanation:
The first message with the subject "Very stupid
subject" was written by Jan-Peter Koopmann and has
two direct replies: Jrg-Stefan Sell and Bill Clinton
<grin>. Volker Weber, again, replied to Jrg-Stefan
                   Sell's message...
I hope you get the picture ! Just watch the message
window a bit and you will find out yourself !
By the way: Does anybody really read this
documentation ? If you really happen to read this,
write me a small message. Just curious if this work
                   pays off....

In order to work correctly, messages have to be
linked to their replies. Linking messages by
comparing their subject lines is not a very suitable
solution. Therefore please forget Squish's linking
feature. It will not provide the linking necessary
for Sqed/32. It does not provide real message linking
                   at all, by the way.
Several message kludges provide a much better way of
linking messages. All good fido message editors
should make use of the REPLY kludge. If you reply to
a message, your reply should therefore contain a
REPLY kludge and the message id of the message you
are refering to. If we could somehow link all
messages using their MSGIDs and REPLY kludges, we
would really have the sort of linking Sqed/32 needs.
In fact this appears to be the only reasonable way of
linking messages at all. Several utilities provide

the corresponding documentation for more detail.

Now if you want to change to a specific message,
simply double click on the sender of the message and
the Sqed/32 will display the desired message in the
                   main window.

Of course you can mark one or more messages using
standard OS/2 procedures. Then you can use the
context menu to process all marked messages at the
                   same time.

You will find a detailed explanation of the message
window context menu on page 49.
