This program contains a words per minute chart for the grading, or evaluation, of three minute timings. A student is allowed three timing trials, with the best effort scored and assigned a grade. Each student is permitted a total of six errors during each trial, or two per minute. When this error total is exceeded in all three trials, the student is penalized a letter grade. Thus, unless the error allowance is exceeded, the grade is entirely based upon the words per minute rate. The student notes the timing with the highest grade in the score card that appears after each test trial. Assume the highest words per minute rate for a student in the eighth week of instruction is twenty seven words per minute. We will further assume that the student keyed with no more than six errors, the maximum allowance. To compute the earned grade the computer combines the words per minute rate with the number of errors to determine that a grade of B had been attained. Should this student have exceeded the six error allowance on all of the timing trials, the single trial with the highest stroking rate would be scored. This grade would reflect the penalty required for excess errors.
