A frequent problem that faces all students is the need to divide a word at the end of the writing line. There are a number of word division rules that keyboarders must learn in order to accomplish this task correctly. These division rules should be thoroughly learned, and memorized, by every keyboarder. On first hearing the end of line bell sound, a student should have the ability to react immediately to any required word division. A rule you should never violate is that words must be divided only between syllables; thus, do avoid dividing any word that consists of only one syllable. When you are in doubt as to exactly where one syllable ends and another begins in a word, consult your dictionary. This is an extremely helpful habit to develop. Also, never divide a word that has five or fewer letters even if it has two or more syllables. Here is a rule that concerns itself with beginning and ending syllables: avoid the division of a one letter syllable at the beginning of a word and either a one or two letter syllable at the end of a word. And you must not divide contractions or abbreviations. Only divide after a single letter syllable that is found within a word.
