Emily Math Giffware 1995 ---------- ------------- Introduction: ------------- If you've ever seen what passes for math drill programs, you have probably noticed that there is an awful lot of flash with very little actual math. Sure, the kid has to solve 7+6, but then there's some game gimmick, or Rinko the Flying Donkey comes out and congratulates you, and its a few minutes before the next problem comes on. Emily Math (created for my sister Emily), presents only math. You get a problem, you solve it, the computer beeps, and you go on to the next one. At the end, you are shown your score and speed. That's all! This is especially good for kids who will be getting timed math tests at school; this offers a way to practice without running off lots of dittos for practice. About the Program ----------------- The directions for running the program are reasonably self explanitory. If you're working through some breed of Windows, you should probably make the window full sized. I've also included a file called "math.ico" with a Windows icon for the program. Once you have started, entering "99" as an answer will get you to the results screen without being counted as a wrong answer. If you get an answer wrong three times, the correct answer is displayed. I recommend using the number pad to enter answers; its good practice, and faster than using the keyboard numbers. The program has no memory for what you get wrong, so if you happen to get one several times, its purely coincidence. It does seem to occur rather frequently, though; I have no reasonable theory why. Program Bugs ------------ Obviously, I've tried to fix anything grossly wrong with the program. However: - If you get the problem 11*9=, and enter "99", you'll get kicked out. - Doing something stupid, like entering a letter rather than a number as an answer, will result in a runtime error. - I've found its difficult to tell the difference between a "plus" sign and a "division" sign on some screens. All I can suggest is adjusting the contrast a bit. Opportunities ------------- I make all these programs for my own use, and not intentionally for a profit. Therefore, I don't charge for shareware. If you think this program is worth paying for, then by all means, send me an encouraging check. I wrote this program for my sister Emily. If you'd like another name to appear in the program, send me the name and five dollars (US$5.00) and I'll be happy to send you a customized version. If your child happens to be named Emily, then you're in luck! (or I am, if you happen to request a modification anyway) For those who are so inclined, I'll be happy to send you a printed copy of the code for this program, for twenty dollars (US$20.00). Checks should be made out to Stephen Gifford and any requests or comments should be sent to Stephen Gifford Kennedy Hall 119 Hemenway St., RM 525 Northeastern University Boston, MA 02115-4114
