17 8 INITRACE.TXT (C) COPYRIGHT 1990-1994 GARY J. DARVEAUX Following are some helpful hints to keep in mind as you view the race. You will notice that the main display area is like a TV camera view which moves around the track with the horses. The image in the lower right in- dicates the approximate position of the horses on the track throughout the race. To the left of this image is a decimal number. This is the distance in furlongs from the leading horse to the finish line (one furlong = 220 yards = 1/8 mile). During the race you will see this number steadily decrease. Above that number is the last fractional time of the race. This time is updated after each 1/4 mile so you have some idea of how fast the pace is. In the lower left part of the screen will appear the list of horses in the order of first to last. This list is updated during the race every few seconds. For most adapter / monitor combinations you will also notice the inside rail and other items change color during the race. @14Yellow@7 indicates the horses are on a curve; @13Magenta@7 indicates they are in the final 1/16 mile (110 yards) of the race. The inside rail will also change from small dots to large dots in the last 50 yards of the race. All of this helps you to anticipate the finish line approaching. Now you are ready to watch the sample race...
