Dr. W. Edwards Deming, the man the japanese credit as having taught them how3 to improve and manage quality, developed a 'System of Profound Knowlege' to help us to see vital thing in processes and systems that would otherwise be invisible.To successfully control any process, it must be understood that there is a fundamental difference between variation due to 'common' causes - the inherent random variability which is always present in the process - and variation due to a shift or change of something which affects the process. In Variation balls are fired from a launcher , bounce once then land on a target scale. A small amount of random variation is built in to the velocity of the balls as they emerge from the launcher, and each ball has a slightly different amount of 'bounciness'.
