Walt Disney is an example of how a poor citizen of our nation can rise to great wealth. Yet, more importantly, he is an example of how one through applying his inate talents can contribute to the well being of his society. Born to a poor family, early in his life Walt was required to work in order to help the family survive. He spent many hours as a paper carrier, often trudging through deep snow drifts that formed along his delivery route. Art was of great interest to Disney, an area in which he was personally talented. By diligent study and practice, he became a famous cartoonist. Mickey Mouse was his most famous cartoon creation. In his early form Mickey had a tail that was removed by Disney after negative comments from the viewing audience. Mickey, of course, became a mouse without a tail. Despite his fame as a pioneer in cartoon related work, Disney contributed to many advances in motion picture technology. These included the areas of sound, color, and film photography. Many view his insight into the needs of family entertainment as being his most lasting achievement. Disney designed and operated amusement parks that appealed to all members of the family.
