Name : Cesium Symbol : Cs Atomic # : 55 Atom weight: 132.905 Melting P. : 28.40 Boiling P. : 669.3 Oxidation : +1 Pronounced : SEE-zi-em From : Latin coesium "sky blue"; named for the characteristic blue lines of its spectrum Identified : Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchoff in 1860 Appearance : Very soft, ductile, light gray metal Note : Reacts readily with most gasses [Properties] Cesium is one of the Group-IA alkali metals. This group includes more familiar active metals such as lithium (Li), sodium (Na), and potassium (K). These have been called alkali metals because they react explosively with water to produce a caustic metal hydroxide, or alkali, compound. Few people have ever seen a blob of pure cesium metal. Those who have seen the solid form say it is a silvery white, soft, and ductile metal. It is easily melted at 28.4 degrees, so it often exists as a liquid that looks much like mercury. In fact, mercury is the only metal that has a melting point lower than cesium.
