Name : Terbium Symbol : Tb Atomic # : 65 Atom weight: 158.925 Melting P. : 1356 Boiling P. : 3230 Oxidation : +3 Pronounced : TUR-bi-em From : Identified : Gustaf Mosadner in 1843 Appearance : Soft, ductile, silvery-gray, rare-earth metal Note : Used in modest amounts in special lasers and solid-state devices [Properties] Terbium is a soft, silvery metal. It feels something like lead, but looks a bit more like aluminum. It is a lot heavier than either of those familiar elements, though. Terbium is a member of the lanthanide series, from lanthanum (element 57) through lutetium (element 71). The element has two, temperature-dependent crystal forms, or allotropes. The alpha form is the one that exists at room temperature - up to 1298 degrees. The beta form from prevails above that temperature.
