Name : Erbium Symbol : Er Atomic # : 68 Atom weight: 167.26 Melting P. : 1529 Boiling P. : 2868 Oxidation : +3 Pronounced : UR-bi-em From : Identified : C.G. Mosander in 1843 Appearance : Soft, malleable, silvery metal Note : Might have called akatatasium (Greek akatastasia, "confusion") [Properties] Pure erbium is soft and malleable. It has a silvery metallic luster that tarnishes only slightly in air. It is a member of the lanthanide group of elements that fit onto the periodic chart between lantanum (element 57) and hafnium (element 72). Erbium has unusual magnetic properties, including the fact that it is antiferromagnetic across a fairly wide range of low temperatures. It becomes superconductive at very low temperatures.
