Name : Bismuth Symbol : Bi Atomic # : 83 Atom weight: 208.98 Melting P. : 271.3 Boiling P. : 1560 Oxidation : +3, +5 Pronounced : BIZ-meth From : German bisemutum (Now wismut) Identified : Basil Valentine in 1450 Appearance : Hard, brittle, steel-gray metal with a pinkish tinge Note : Low melting point [Properties] Bismuth is a heavy, brittle metal. It can be polished to a lustrous, gray-white color with a slight tinge of pink. It is rarely seen in this form, however, because it is usually alloyed with other metals. Bismuth is the last member of the Group-VA elements on the periodic table. This makes it the heaviest of the nitrogen elements. In some respects, bismuth is chemically similar to a couple of its fellow group members, arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb).
